On November 7, 2015, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump controversially hosted SNL, and the result was quite disappointing, with very few redeeming features.

The controversy started when the comedic show, SNL, announced that the Republican candidate Donald Trump would be hosting the November 7th show, much to to the disdain of many people. Due to his numerous comments on Hispanics (in particular Mexicans) many thought that this step by SNL  and NBC Universal was a sign of acceptance of Trump’s comments and actions. Many people started petitions to stop Donald Trump from hosting SNL, one protester proclaiming that they were able to get 577,494 signatures (though not confirmed) against Trump hosting the November 7th episode.

“It is a level of endorsement that says to America that every hateful and racist thing Donald Trump has said since the moment he launched his campaign is acceptable and no big deal,”  Illinois Democratic representativeé Luis V. Gutiérrez said.

Yet despite the 200 protesters outside the SNL studios, Donald Trump hosted what was soon to be a very disappointing episode. The opening monologue was very bland and full “ugh” moments such as his joke about Rosie O’Donnell and him “confusing” her for one of the cast members of SNL. His presentation felt very monotone and mundane, almost as if Donald Trump were reading directly off a paper in his hands, rather than trying to make it as fluid as possible, he often came off as cringe-worthy. After the monologue came the opening sketch, where Donald Trump successfully won the election and two years in, has made America “great” again. Though spiced with a few funny moments (such as when the president of Mexico gives Trump a check to build the wall and praises Trump for his outstanding work), the jokes overall felt badly written. Soon after came a sketch where Trump was part of band and was playing the laser harp. Here, more than anywhere else, did the jokes feel as if a two-year-old wrote on a sick day, the jokes were absolutely horrendous and the crowd was often times very quiet, with only a few snickers here and there. In addition to this sketch, there was also one where Trump made fun of the actors in the sketch via Twitter. Though slightly better than in other sketches, jokes that were supposed to be satirical of Trump, felt out of place and forced.

Jokes presented in SNL are often satirical and at times even slightly offensive, yet that is the jist of the entire show. The jokes however, instead of  being hilarious, felt forced and not that funny. The episode overall was quite bad, except for a few redeeming features, and left a bad aftertaste and not worthy of being rewatched .
