Sophomore slump won’t be the scariest thing students face this school year – Cooper City High School is offering an exclusive field trip to Universal Orlando’s terrifying Halloween Horror Nights theme park for Class of 2019.

“Since this is my first time going to Halloween Horror Nights, I really don’t know what to expect,” CCHS sophomore Alexa Pichardo said. “But I’m excited that I’ll be able to experience it for the first time with all my friends through the trip. It’ll be a lot less scary if I can push myself behind them.”

The field trip has been in talks since February of last year, but administration just recently approved the trip for CCHS sophomores. Class officers will be selling tickets a month in advance for $130 each, from the 19th to the 23rd of September at A and B lunch. Students must have no obligations in order to participate, and should come with a notarized field trip form and medical insurance form (or  a copy of insurance card) for treatment in case any injuries occur.

“Every overnight field trip needs an insurance card, and the notary on the field trip form makes it official,” said the Class of 2019 sponsor, Alfredo Pichardo. “That’s probably the hardest part of the whole process.”

The field trip is scheduled for Thursday, October 27th, an early release day. Though school ends at 12:30, sophomores must report to school as usual. However, students may be released to the auditorium before eighth period for attendance. The buses will leave at about 1:00 in the afternoon, and return at 6:00 in the morning the next day, the 28th. Each travel coach will visit a rest stop midway between Cooper City and Orlando. Cooper City High School’s dress code must be upheld during the field trip, and students must carry their school identification card.

“We tell them not to bring book bags because there’s no place to leave them at and they will not be allowed on the bus, unless it’s a small bag with water or a snack,” added Pichardo.

CCHS’ Halloween Horror Night fundraiser has one hundred and fifty slots open for Class of 2019 sophomores, but the possibility for Class of 2018’s juniors to participate exists.

“If we don’t sell out all one hundred and fifty seats, we are requesting administration to possibly open it to eleventh graders,” explained Pichardo. “We would like to sell out all three buses, which are on hold for us.”

Halloween Horror Night’s main themes this year are American Horror Story, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Exorcist, and the Walking Dead. Universal Studios operates normally during the day, but at night converts to an open-all-night horror theme park.

“You walk around twelve scare zones and haunted houses with your friends,” said Class of 2018 president Jessica Less. “It’s really fun.”
