Many Cooper City High School clubs and organizations are holding Valentine’s Day fundraisers over the month of February in order to promote themselves within the school.

The goal of many of these clubs is to raise money through Valentine’s Day celebrations, a holiday known for its candy and gifts. Over the week of February 9-13, during A and B lunches, Key Club is selling stuffed animals of all shapes, sizes, and scents, ranging from $2-15. Students can choose from small and large bears and monkeys, costing more as the size increases. Some of the bears are even chocolate scented, an option some students remember from Key Club’s similar stuffed animal fundraiser last year, where they made about $350. Stuffed animals also include a handwritten note with the price. On February 13, club officers plan to distribute the bears and monkeys to 1st hour teacher classrooms.

“The money will go mostly towards club funds in general,” Key Club President Zabryna Atkinson-Diaz said. “However, we are also trying to decrease the price of our convention from April 9-12.”

Another popular fundraiser this month has been Fashion Club’s lip-shaped flavored lollipop sales, which were also held in the cafeteria. Each lollipop was sold for $1 and, initially, the fundraiser was to continue throughout February, but the club sold out all 1,000 lollipops by February 4. However, Fashion Club has made $600 from the lollipops, which they plan on using for future expenses for the club.

“The sales just took off like wildfire,” Fashion Club Sponsor Linda Snider said. “We could have ordered another 1,000, easily. Students still come in here asking to buy one.”

The Class of 2016 also joined in the Valentine’s Day festivities, taking a spin on the traditional candy and toy sales. Students can buy a kiss on the cheek, as well as a real Hershey’s kiss, from Pistol Pete, the CCHS mascot. The $1 fee also includes a photo with the mascot. The fundraiser is held in the Activities Room of the cafeteria on every Friday during the month of February, where a booth is set up for the pictures.

“It’s a great fundraiser to raise school spirit and add a little money to the Class of 2016’s treasury for prom,” Class of 2016 President Blane Silverman said.

The CCHS Choir has also deviated from traditional sales and put their singing skills on the market. Throughout the weeks of February 2-11 during A and B lunches, students can buy a song for their special someone for $1. During 4th hour on February 13, choir members will sing for the receiving students. The members were divided into groups of 5-10 kids, and each group was responsible for three or more songs. In total, there are 10 groups, some with a guitarist and some purely vocal. Choir has raised about $200 so far, and hopes to raise more in order to purchase the copyright of new songs for the organization. This fundraiser has been popular for Choir in recent years, and this year they are incorporating more students into the event.

“We’re trying to give each and every choir member a chance to sing,” CCHS Choir Sponsor Thomas Mayer said.
