Getting lost is always a struggle on the  first day of school especially for freshmen who are confused by the room numbers of Cooper City High School. With the goal of assisting students as they navigate through their first day of school, members of the Student Government Association transformed into Wilderness Explorers.

CCHS Senior and SGA Recording Secretary Jessica Lupo was inspired by Russell from the movie UP.  She encouraged SGA to dress up and take to the halls to help their fellow classmates find their way around. Russell is the hyperactive but lovable protagonist, known for his uniform consisting of a bright yellow shirt, orange scarf, and hat. He is characterized by a positive attitude and a desire to help others.

Similarly, SGA members were decked out in brightly colored attire, and proudly toted a flag or net to make them easy to spot. Stationed in every hallway as well as the newly paved courtyard, they scanned for confused students, and helped direct students to their correct classroom. They attempted to reduce the amount of students getting lost in the labyrinth known as Cooper City High School.

“I feel that the wilderness explorers made the first day of school eventful and helped alleviate some of the nervousness the first day brings,” said SGA member and Senior Logan Silverman.

With multiple buildings and many staircases, freshmen are notorious for getting lost, especially if it is their first time on campus. The first couple days new students are often tardy because they went to the wrong floor, or worse, the wrong building. Many felt that dressing up is a fun way to help make the first day a little easier.

This year SGA is making a big effort to increase school spirit and student participation at CCHS. The Wilderness Explorers were only the start; students should keep their eyes peeled for signs around the school announcing what color to wear on Friday in order to support our Cooper City Cowboys football team.

“SGA can only go up from here,” said Senior and SGA Recording Secretary Jessica Lupo.
