Last Friday was a defining moment in Cowboy football history. After thirty-nine years of trials and tribulations, all the hard work put into this season finally paid off. For the first time in the history of Cooper City High School, the Cowboys walked off the field District Champions after their game against the Coral Springs Colts.
Even with the pressure they were under, the Cowboys came out victorious with a final score of 34 to 12. While the offense was clearly on point, the defense didn’t fall short either, allowing the Colts only 99 yards of offensive gain through out the whole game.
They started the game off strong, with a 5-yard run for the touch down by running back Camden Krohn. With a successful extra point attempt by kicker Daniel Yanks, the Cowboys would end the first quarter with a seven to nothing lead. The Colts were able to come back with a touchdown, absent the extra point, setting the score at seven to six with the Cowboys still in the lead.
Cooper City would further their lead into the second half with a fifty-yard pass by quarterback Myles Notkin to wide receiver Blake Michaels. This put the offense in position for Krohn to run in the ball for the second CCHS touchdown of the game. With Yanks second extra point attempt successful, they then led by eight. Far from unnerved by the Cowboys aggressive play, the Colts made a successful offensive move and were able to score their second and last touch down of the game. However, their attempt at a two-point conversion was unsuccessful putting the score 14 to 12 with the Cowboys still in the lead. With roughly four minutes left in the third quarter, Notkin made possibly one of the best touchdowns of this season. With a third successful kick by Yanks, Cowboys pushed ahead of the Colts by another 9 points.
The fourth quarter was controlled by the Cowboy’s running game. Implementing the brute force of running back Brandon Lombard, they were able to score their fourth touchdown of the game. With the extra point, the score was 28 to 12. Still, the Cowboys were not satisfied. Even with just two minutes left in the game they pushed their way down the field for a fifth touchdown. A pass by Notkin to tight end Jordan Mornay made the final score 34-12.
Though the players will eventually graduate and move on, this is a team sure to go down in Cooper City High school history. Fueled by the pride of their fans and doubt of their competitors, the Cowboys marked the end of a decade and the start of an age. With only one year under his belt as Cowboys head coach, Art Taylor is undoubtedly going to bring many more district championships back to CCHS. This championship win puts the Cowboys record at 7-2. Next Friday, they take on the Flanagan Falcons in this season’s Homecoming game.
