Cowboys Rally to defeat South Broward and win their first playoff game in the school’s history.
The stands were full, the crowd was pumped up, and both teams were ready to go. The Cooper City Cowboys looked to win their first playoff game in school history against the visiting South Broward Bulldogs on Friday November 19th.
South Broward quickly jumped on the scoreboard first, when star running back Kevin Grooms took a handoff 50 yards for a touchdown on their first possession.
Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter Cooper City was looking for a spark to get things moving in their direction, and they soon found their answer. With 3 minutes and 12 seconds left in the first half Justin Ingram blocked a South Broward punt in Cowboy territory, setting the Cowboys up in great field position.
The Cowboys offense was rolling as quarterback Myles Notkin ran for 17 yards own to the 10 yard line with 2 minutes to go in the half. Notkin later capitalized with a touchdown run from the 1 as time was dwindling down.
With 7:41 seconds to go in the third quarter, James Zawoyski capped off an excellent Cowboy drive, nailing a 27 yard field goal to give Cooper City their first lead of the game, 10-7.
From that point on the Cowboys had one thing on their mind, to preserve the lead. South Broward really helped out by compiling a total of eight penalties for a total of 83 yards.
With 2:30 left in the fourth quarter, and South Broward looking for a final shot at redemption, defensive back Eleazar Rausseo recorded a game sealing interception. Cooper City’s defense looked great throughout, holding the Bulldogs to just 7 total points.
The final score read Cooper City 10, South Broward 7. Next week the Cowboys are going to St. Thomas Aquinas to face the Raiders, who recently defeated Coconut Creek 59-0 to advance to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
