As the school year comes to a close, journalism students gathered from across South Florida to attend the Sun Sentinel High School Journalism Awards, held at Archbishop McCarthy High School. By the end of the night, The Lariat staff had received 20 awards for its achievements over the past school year.
Individual writers Sophia Wengier and Kyle Nelson received first place Editorial Writer and Sports Writer, respectively. The publication was awarded first place for its features section, as well as second place for its website and third place for its use of social media. The Lariat came in third place in the Special Project category for the Twitter selfie contest which accompanied the release of its second issue. The Lariat was awarded second place Best Overall.
In addition to the 20 awards earned in judged categories, sophomores Genna Nordling and Abbie Tuschman were named “staffers of the year” for their achievements and contributions to The Lariat. Next year, Nordling and Tuschman will serve as The Lariat’s print and online editors in chief, respectively.
