MEGAN OTERO, ADVISOR, began her journey here as a student teacher, completing her bachelor’s degree, then transitioned into substitute teaching before taking on a full-time teaching role. Her passion has always been English language arts, and she has a love for scrapbooking, photography, and creating collages. When she attended high school, she had the honor of having her work published in the Sports and Activities Central Broward Directory. Shes thrilled to be part of this community and is eager to showcase the fantastic work of The Lariart students in their upcoming issues.
EMILY MORENO, PRINT EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, is a senior who joined The Lariat her sophomore year and is ready to start her second year as an editor-in-chief. Apart from school, Emily dances as part of the senior company at Academy of Arts and studies all styles of dance. In addition to dancing there, she works at their front desk and as a substitute teacher. She also interns at her church and loves being involved in school. She’s National Honor Society President, Class Historian, National English Honor Society Vice President, Broward County Honor Society Parliamentarian, and Book Club co-president. Emily loves spending time with her family, watching Wes Anderson movies, and collecting records. She looks forward to another great year with the Lariat and her last year at CCHS.
ORIAN TZIPORA-HAROSH, ONLINE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, is a third-year member of The Lariat. This year she decided to go easy since it is senior year and only take 3 AP classes to really get that last bit of academic validation. She can many times be found at the beach, hanging out with her friends or listening to Chase Atlantic, her favorite band but dont forget the queen herself Taylor Swift. She has loved her time in The Lariat and is sad that it’s her final year. In the future, Orian aspires to have a job in the medical field or relating to law, the futures only 6 months away now.
ASHLYN COHEN, MANAGING EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, is a senior who’s ready to begin her third year with The Lariat. Outside of school, Ashlyn is active at the gym and plays soccer for both her club and her school’s varsity team. For college, Ashlyn is committed to play division 1 soccer for Valparaiso University and will be pursuing a Nursing major. She also loves being actively involved in her schools clubs and activities. She is President of National English Honor Society and Public Relations for Science National Honor Society. Other hobbies include going for early morning runs, reading, and obsessing over Taylor Swift. She’s excited for her senior year and is looking forward to her last year with the staff.
LONDON DERNIS, EDITORIAL ASSISTANT, is a junior who loves reading and writing. This is her second year in The Lariat, and she is very excited to continue writing articles and meeting new people. Outside of school, London spends her time browsing the bookshelves at Barnes & Noble. She used to enjoy a bowl of tomato bisque at The Cheese Course in Pembroke Gardens, but it has since closed and is currently a very sensitive topic. London is academically driven and hopes to pursue a career as an English professor. She also types at an average of 105 words per minute and brings it up whenever she can.
ABBY GOLDBERG, HEAD EDITOR, is a junior who joined The Lariat in 2022. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends and making unnecessary starbucks trips; However, Abby can typically be found at theater rehearsals. She’s an active Justin Bieber enthusiast and hopes to someday travel the world with him on tour. She is so excited for her second year with The Lariat and can’t wait to get started.
JENNA HEDRICK, HEAD EDITOR, is a senior who loves to socialize. Jenna is ecstatic as she moves into her third year in The Lariat. She is also a peer counselor and a member of the First Priority Club at CCHS. When not writing for the paper, you may catch her on the singing team at her church, hanging out with friends or playing beach volleyball. Jenna has a passion for fashion and takes every chance she gets to get new clothes. Jenna also has a collection of all different kinds of bracelets.
ESTHER WEISSMARK, GENERAL EDITOR, is a senior participating in her second year with The Lariat. When not in school, Esther can be found shopping at the mall or hanging out with friends and family. She loves traveling and enjoys days at the beach with her friends. Her favorite colors are pink and blue and her favorite subject in school is science. Esther is excited to graduate later this year and is excited to attend a university afterward. She is looking forward to another great school year as a part of The Lariat staff.
ALIA SALIM, GENERAL EDITOR, is currently a senior and has been a part of The Lariat since 2022. You can probably catch her listening to music or working on her computer. As part of her extracurriculars within CCHS, she is the president of Environmental Club. Outside of school, she works at her Mosque as the event planner and Sunday school principal, she also works with a non-profit called ‘Who is Hussain?’(Miami). She is excited to have an amazing final year with The Lariat.
DEVIN ALDERMAN, STAFF WRITER, is currently a senior and will be participating in her second year with the Lariat Staff. Aside from The Lariat, she is the president of CTV and the Vice President of Science National Honor Society. When not in school, Devin can be found shopping at the mall with friends as she loves to make unnecessary purchases. She’s obsessed with her bed which is where she spends most of her time after school napping or doing homework. For her senior year, Devin is excited to graduate and get into a good college to attend next year.
MICHAEL SAVARESE,PHOTOGRAPHER, is a senior who joined The Lariat in 2023-2024. Michael is on the Cooper City Cowboy football team and for this season he is hoping to go the distance and win districts. Michael also plays O-Line and D-Line for the Cowboys he’s been on varsity since his sophomore year. In Michael’s spare time he likes to spend time with his family and play video games with his friends. He loves taking photographs when he has the time. He’s plans after high school are either to play college football or become a firefighter like he planned originally.
SOFYA STAFFORD, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER, is a hard-working sophomore who loves capturing beautiful moments with the eye of a lens. Sofya is taking honors and AICE courses to get the AICE diploma and wants to get into an ivy league or liberal arts college. Aside from school she enjoys traveling, journaling, spending time with family and friends, listening to music and podcasts about positivity or criminal cases. She finds journaling her way of expressing the way she feels. Her favorite artist is J cole and she hopes to go to his festival one day. She started taking pictures when she was just a little girl and always brought her little Polaroid camera with her whenever she would travel. Sofya could talk to you all day about conspiracy theories and the value of life. She loves making change and standing up for others so one day she wants to be a judge or be a part of congress. To be able to be part of The Lariat newspaper is an honor for her and she is super excited for this year.
SOFIA PARKER, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER, is a junior at CCHS who is starting her first year at The Lariat. Aside from The Lariat, she is also a member of Rho Kappa and works at Publix so that she can spend money on unnecessary things. She passionately loves all things cats, video games, books and pop culture and will talk for hours about any of those things once you get her going. Due to the challenge of many AP & AICE classes as well as extracurricular activities, Sofia also thoroughly enjoys relaxing, unwinding, and inevitably sleeping for 12 hours.
ISABELLA LAGES, STAFF WRITER, is a senior in highschool in her first year with The Lariat. Isabella is a dedicated student who has taken many advanced and college level classes. She is also passionate about school spirit and is Multicultural club meeting coordinator, Future Medical Students of America (FMPA) vice-president, and National Honor Society member. Aside from school, Isabella enjoys working out at the gym, boxing, and jiu-jitsu. She also works in childcare with kids whose English is their second language. Isabella looks forward to a great Senior year and future college experience.
LEONIE FLEURE, STAFF WRITER, is a junior at CCHS and this is her first year in The Lariat during the 2023-2024 school year. She can be found at the beach most of the time watching the sunsets or on the field playing lacrosse. She loves listening to music and tries to go to every concert she can. Additionally, she loves watching horror movies and going to Chick-fil-A in her free time.
AMBER HARGADON, STAFF WRITER, is a junior at CCHS. She is President of the SSIC club and a 2nd year staff member of the Lariat. She broke their foot dancing the Cha Cha Slide, and was still faster walking than most students, even on crutches. She enjoys expressing herself through art and photography. Some of her many hobbies include playing softball, painting, and writing poetry. She works hard and hopes to grow many of her current skills.
MELANIE TAMAYO, STAFF WRITER, is currently a junior at CCHS. The 2023 school year will be her second year in the Lariat. She is a first-generation Colombian and loves embracing her Hispanic roots. Melanie is a huge Karol G fan and loves listening to music in her free time. When she’s not in school, you can find her hanging out with friends or buying food.
TAYLOR ALDERMAN, STAFF WRITER, is currently a sophomore. This will be her first year participating in The Lariat, and she hopes to spend the next two years in it as well. Aside from school, Taylor can be found at the mall, the beach, or in her bed. When Taylor is not bombarded by schoolwork, she likes to hang out with her friends or family. She is also the social media manager for Current Events Club and plans to join more clubs in her following years at CCHS.
STEVE ZAPATA, STAFF WRITER, is a senior for the 2023-2024 school year and it is his very first year in the Lariat. He is active in his community as he participates in the Environmental Club, National Honor Society (NHS) and National English Honor Society (NEHS). When he is not busy with his extracurriculars, The Lariat or being the treasurer for the Environmental Club, he is seen writing sci-fi, fantasy, mystery or horror stories. He also loves drawing- both digitally or physically and never says no to anything in creativity. Other hobbies include building Lego sets for his ever-expanding Lego city and proceeding to step on some bricks barefoot from time to time. Since Steve is Ecuadorian, he visits his family in Ecuador and climbs mountains and enters jungles for new adventures. For now, surviving his final high school year will be his biggest adventure yet.
MALIA LAHEY, STAFF WRITER, is a senior, and she has been on the Lariat staff for 3 years as of 2021. Lahey is a staff writer and in addition to the Lariat she also fills her schedule with extracurriculars. Lahey plays on the school varsity Soccer team and the Flag Football team. She enjoys listening to music and going to the beach. She was in Journalism 1 and loves to write sports articles and athletic features.
TAYLOR JIMENEZ, STAFF WRITER, is currently a sophomore at CCHS and is entering her first year in The Lariat during the 2023-2024 school year. Outside of school, she can be found at the beach or pool while enjoying Starbucks or Dunkin. She also loves vacations and traveling especially when the beach, sunsets, and shopping are included. Additionally, she enjoys watching movies and listening to music. Her favorite movie series is the Hunger games, and she is obsessed with Taylor Swift and anything Taylor Swift related.
HAYLEE WINEBERNER, STAFF WRITER, is a junior entering her second year in the Lariat, and has spent three years working under the Journalism category. When she isn’t on school grounds, Haylee can be found at home catching on missed hours of sleep or at the nearest Goodwill to fill up her overly full closet. She’s a well-known music enthusiast who always tries to attend local concerts, and is even willing to travel out of state just to see a band she loves to probably an unhealthy extent. You can also find her nose-deep in a book most likely about true crime, horror, or psychology. Haylee also draws and plays the bass during her free time, and wishes to pursue a career under the art/writing category.
MILANA FIGUEROA, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER, is currently a senior. She played soccer for Cooper and dances. Milana has been a dancer and soccer player since she was four years old. Milana was a dance teacher for a little bit, she really enjoyed teaching young kids and inspiring them. Milana also enjoys writing and taking pictures. One day Milana wants to become a journalist and a photographer in the future.
JENSEN SICKELS, STAFF WRITER, is a junior at CCHS who dreams of making it big. Involved in 4 AP classes and many school activities, such as poetry club, she is excited to join The Lariat. She believes culture and creativity is in everything, you just have to know where to find it. She has been playing piano for 12 years and violin for 1, and writing for much longer. The Lariat gives Jensen the opportunity to further her skills and passion.
