In the 2016-2017 school year, the senior class will be reaping the benefits of their hard work – literally.

As the senior class of 2017 works toward graduation, Guidance Director Mrs. Clara Neeck, along with SGA, has implemented a way that they can be rewarded for graduation requirements. Every month for the rest of the year, seniors will be able to win a gift basket for completing one of various graduation requirements.

“Every month [a member of] the senior class gets to put their name in the basket if they have met certain criteria,” Mrs. Neeck said.

This month the basket is movie themed and will include candy, popcorn, two free movie tickets, and more. The drawing will be dependent on seniors having at least 40 hours of community service. Seniors must register with an entry card that can be found in Mrs. Neeck’s office before and after school or during lunch periods to be sure that they qualify with the correct number of hours for the drawing. The winner will be chosen on September 30th, 2016.

“The gift baskets are a great motivator for kids to do well in school and make sure they have all their requirements to graduate,” Senior Brogan Ness said.

While this month the basket is movie themed, there will be multiple drawings with varied themes that will take place throughout the year. A basket will be drawn up until seniors leave in May. These baskets include Homecoming tickets for completing an online class, a grab bag for applying for Bright Futures and FAFSA, a coffee basket for completing and passing the FSA and Algebra EOC, a beach pack for a 2.0  or higher unweighted GPA, another grab bag awarded to a person who has college ready scores on SAT or ACT, a Prom ticket for less than 3 absences since the beginning of the year, and finally, a leaving home basket for completing the senior survey.

“I decided to do this really as an incentive program but also to celebrate seniors who have completed the requirements they need to graduate,” Mrs. Neeck said.

Students may think that they don’t need a reminder for what they need to graduate, but others believe that it can be beneficial. Not to mention, it allows for the guidance counselors to have more contact with the students.

“I think it’s a great idea and I think that it’s a way to show appreciation for the [seniors] for doing what they need to do,” Guidance Counselor Ms. Sullivan said. “I look back and I loved my last senior class and I think ‘why didn’t I do something like that for them.’ ”

Whether or not it will be an ongoing tradition at CCHS is undecided, but the drawings will be going on all year long.
