Before the dark of night, the stars came out to attend the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards and see if they would be rewarded for their stunning television performances.

The show was hosted by Stephen Colbert, who sang about “the world… [seeming] less like a dumpster fire when you watch good television” as part of the customary opening monologue. The rest of the night was just as lively and was filled with interesting moments such as when Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda said that they “still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, lying, egotistical bigot” or when Nicole Kidman made a very emotional speech after winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for “Big Little Lies.”

Additional soon-to-be iconic moments included Rupaul’s cameo as the Emmy statue, Lena Waithe becoming the first black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, and Kidman and Reese Witherspoon’s plea for more roles for women in television.

Overall, the most wins of the night went to “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “Big Little Lies,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale”- all shows that are substantially socially and politically charged.

This year the Emmys also casted a brighter light on the rising success of streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and more, by honoring them with over 120 Emmy nominations combined.

Another vital aspect of the Primetime Emmy’s had always been its fashion with best dressed going to the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Laverne Cox, Claire Foy, Shailene Woodley and Millie Bobbi Brown, according to the New York Post.
