Cooper City High School’s National Honor Society has begun accepting submissions for their annual Black History Month Art Gala.
“The NHS Gala shows we have a lot of creative people here,” Senior Benjamin Goldstein said. “And they do good things with that, and put a lot of effort into these things they do.”
For the annual gala, NHS will be presenting the gala around “Unity and Kindness.” Submissions, which can include performances, poetry, or artwork based on the theme, are due to Mr. Dixon in Room 3446 by February 17th. Submitted pieces will be auctioned at the Gala, held on February 24th in the CCHS Cafeteria, in order to raise money for the club’s Museum Day, where NHS takes underprivileged children on a field trip to the Museum of Discovery and Science.
“We’re trying to celebrate unity through art,” NHS President Nikki Tjin a Djie said.
Although the Gala will be taking place during Black History Month, NHS sponsor Mr. Dixon stresses that entries can draw attention to any minority group, be it racial, ethnic, sexual, religious, etc. The Gala is meant to celebrate Unity and Kindness seen throughout the community and give attention to issues of massive importance impacting any group facing struggles, be them social or otherwise.
“The NHS Gala draws a bigger picture of current social issues,” Junior Dashiel Heidt said. “By submitting pieces, you are contributing to a wider appreciation of groups that are discriminated against.”
Awards will be given to the top three submissions; the 1st place winner will receive Beats wireless headphones, the 2nd place winner will receive a Kindle Fire HD, and the 3rd place winner will receive an HP wireless printer. Last year’s Art Gala pulled in $1300 for the Relay for Life Association, and students are working hard to make sure this year’s Gala lives up to, or even exceeds, last year’s performance.
