After growing up with aspirations of being a politician, Cooper City High School Senior Louis Bremser got a taste of the job over the summer. Bremser was fortunate enough to be elected the 69th Governor of Florida American Legion Boys State in Tallahassee, Florida. Bremser was nominated by the federalist party to run for governor, and he was selected by peers from all around Florida for this position after winning a debate against another nominee.
Bremser always aspired to be a lawyer or politician and loved to argue, which explained Bremser’s sudden connection with debate when he entered Cooper City High School. Wanting to take his love of debate and politics to the next level during his senior year, Louis decided to try get to the 2012 Boys State competition.
“Each year one girl and one boy from our school is picked to go to the capital to participate in Girl’s State and Boy’s State respectively.” Bremser said. “I sent my resume to guidance and they approved me.”
The program was held July 8 to July 14 on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Bremser was selected to go to and participate in the Boys State competition, which is a one week long mock government simulation and educational program for rising seniors around the state. Bremser met major figureheads in Tallahassee and learned about Florida history and how our state government is set up. Throughout the week, members got to participate in local elections within their towns, and then county elections, and then state-level elections. Bremser won all of the elections and was eventually nominated by the Federalist party to run for governor. There was a big debate between Louis and the other candidate in front of the 500+ students, and after the students voted. Louis was good enough to win and become the 69th Governor of Florida American Legion Boys State.
“I am honored to represent the 2012 Boy’s state program as Governor. I have learned so much about myself, my state, and my fellow staters.” Bremser said.
After winning, Louis selected his cabinet members and deliberated on bills put forward by the students in the legislative branch. After discussing them, Bremser had the power to put them into circulation or not.
“I will never forget my experience there. I met many bright and determined people there who I will forever remain in contact with. Because of Boy’s State I have solidified my goal of studying political science in college and one day becoming a politician.” Bremser said. “Boy’s State gave me insight on how our political system works and greatly influenced my plans for the future.”
Although becoming the governor of Florida in a mock government simulation is a great accomplishment, Bremser feels that his biggest accomplishment to date is expanding the Debate Club to record levels as the Debate President.
“I take pride in the CCHS Speech and Debate Team. They’re all like family to me” Bremser said.
It’s not all business with Bremser, however. He’s still a normal teen. In his free time he likes to jog, read up on politics and news, watch movies, and hang out with friends.
“Between school, debate, and working at Publix, it’s hard to find a balance. I just tell myself that all the hard work will pay off and I push on.” Bremser said. “My peers keep me motivated to do these things. I have great friends who help me out when times get rough.”
Bremser hopes in 20 years to have graduated from law school and to be a practicing lawyer or local politician. He hopes to one day run for public office, however his dream job is president of the United States.
“For anyone who wants to go to Boy’s State and run for a state-wide position, here’s my advice: Don’t be afraid. Go out there and give it your 110%. Run for a Senate seat, run for Governor, run for a cabinet position, take this rare opportunity and try your best.” Bremser said.
