Cooper City High School’s Homecoming week continued with the SGA’s Lip Sync Battles on Thursday.

From each class of Cooper City High’s student government representatives came a series of dance routines, all revolving around the theme of songs from past decades. The sophomore class dressed up as a typical 1970’s hippies, with tie-dye clothes, funky hair, and rounded sunglasses, and performed songs of the same period, like the now iconic theme song to That 70’s Show. The senior class of 2017 ran with the theme of the 1950’s, performing snippets of songs like “Greased Lightning” from the musical Grease, set in that time period, and wearing clothes reminiscent of the archetypical greaser, with black leather jackets and bright red lipstick.

The class representatives competed against each other in a series of lip sync and dance routines in front of a panel of judges consisting of Mr. Franzone, Ms. Farmer, and Ms. Lawrence. The event started with the audience being let into the auditorium at five in the afternoon, with last minute preparations and waiting for more people to show up, the actual show didn’t start until five thirty, with mostly pop from the eighties and nineties being played for half an hour in order to coast over the music hungry crowd. The music also served to pump the audience up for the upcoming spectacle.

Over the next hour, the SGA reps for each of the classes performed acts based around their respective decade, with the judges praising or critiquing each one for things such as choreography, general liveliness, actually lip syncing to the lyrics of the songs, which some groups forgot to do in the heat of the moment, and showmanship. Class reps went head to head in several tiers of competition, with both the class of 2019 and 2020 being voted out by the judges. Suddenly, it was down to the juniors and seniors. However, once the judges realized there were two groups of juniors, they had the two clusters of reps battle it out to see who would face the seniors. The judges couldn’t reach a verdict, so they had to call it a tie between the two halves of the class of 2018, who all teamed up to go against the seniors. While the seniors put up a great performance, the juniors scored a victory that day, securing the class of 2018’s first Homecoming Week victory.
