The Cooper City High School girl’s water polo beat Dr. Crop High School 6-5 on Tuesday, April 26.

This win puts the team through to the state finals, making history as the first CCHS girl’s water polo team to make states in 14 years.

Throughout the game, there was no immediate indication as to which team would take home the title of Regional champions. The score was painstakingly close the entire match, mainly due to both teams having tight defense as well as strong goalies. With the score tied 5-5 in the fourth quarter, sophomore Meris Drew scored the sixth and final goal to lead the Cowboys to victory.

The only two scorers in the game for the Cowboys were Drew with two goals, and Sophomore Kelly Chamura with four goals. Junior goalie Emily Aron had 16 blocks, and junior Maria Pitt and junior Serena Benner played strong defense.

By winning this regional match, the Cowboys will move on the State tournament held in Orlando on Friday April 30, where their first match will be against South Broward High School. This ranks the CCHS girl’s water polo team in the top 8 teams in Florida.
