While most freshmen are still figuring their way around campus and high school life, the new SGA class officers have already taken initiative to get involved. Although all ran unopposed, this year brought about new faces to the SGA community that promise to help the club prosper.
“We have a very strong group of officers and leaders this year,” SGA Sponsor Natalie Flaten said. “I have no doubt that the new freshmen officers will fit right in and learn a plethora of skills from our veteran SGA officers.”
Plans for the next four years are in the beginning stages of development.
“We’ve already met once, and came up with the t-shirt design for this year,” Vice President Kimberly Slinkosky said. “We’ve also started coming up with fundraising ideas.”
The decided slogan was ‘TOGETHER A2 0NE,’ and a big part of their focus will be getting fellow classmates involved. All encouraged the participation of students in decisions that would affect the class as a whole.
“Its our goal to make others’ high school experiences as memorable as possible, and that means raising enough money for prom, senior breakfast, and other fun activities,” Corresponding Secretary Madison Piper said. “Our job is really to serve our class.”
Prior to running, students needed to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, get administrative and teacher approval, and 25 student signatures of support. Because all ran unopposed, the worry about the marketing portion their campaign was minimal.
“For sure, if we were opposed, we would have worked harder marketing, and making ourselves stand out,” Historian Kimber Counts said. “But I know we are still going to work hard and bring our A game, regardless.”
The officers have high hopes for the future, aiming to make a change and have fun along the way.
“I’ve been really looking forward to this,” newly elected Treasurer Lindsey Pardon said. “My older sister, Nicole, has been a part of SGA for a while.”
She’s not the only one; five of the new officers have older siblings part of student government.
“It is kind of weird, being the only one without a sister or brother in SGA,” President Grant Golin joked. “I look forward to this year though and I know it will be a great experience for us all.”
Another notable feature was the introduction of digital voting. This year, tallyspace.com, an online voting platform, was used to carry out election process during personalization periods. Students logged in using their student number and last name. Proven to be successful, many future votes and surveys will also make use of this digital platform.
It’s a lot of hard work, but I know that they are up to it,” former Freshman Historian Gabby Carbone said. “I’ve seen them all, and they are more than capable.”
