BingelistBY LINDSEY HANNAH

Netflix is quickly becoming a viable replacement for traditional cable television. With a host of new shows added monthly, including an increasing selection of original programs, it’s easy to get lost in this broad selection. Without further ado, here are some binge-worthy series from a variety of genres to get you started.

Stranger Things

Let’s just address the elephant in the room: Stranger Things. The show that everyone is apparently obsessed with only has eight episodes so far, so it won’t take long to catch up and join in on the hype. This sci-fi hit includes missing children, secret experiments, and some seriously freaky supernatural occurrences. Netflix describes the series as “scary and ominous,” so it may be just what the doctor ordered to cure those post-Halloween blues.

Jane the Virgin

The second season of this hugely popular series has just been added to Netflix, making this the perfect time to sit down and binge all 44 “chapters.” A personal favorite of mine, the show follows Jane, a twenty-something-year-old virgin who is accidentally artificially inseminated on a trip to the doctor’s office. Crazy, right? It all takes place in Miami and is modeled as a self-aware Spanish soap opera, or telenovela. This makes room for some ridiculous and yet completely possible things to occur, including murder, romance, long lost family, evil twins, and so much more.

Haters Back Off

If you are a fan of the humorous antics of YouTube star Colleen Ballinger’s character Miranda Sings, you are bound to enjoy all eight episodes of this just-released Netflix original. The show reveals the untold story of Miranda’s rise to fame in a way that Netflix describes as “absurd, irreverent, and offbeat.” Witness her failures and triumphs along the road to stardom in this wacky comedy.

Criminal Minds

An oldie-but-goodie, the 11th season of this long-running crime drama has just been added to Netflix. If you are looking for a hardcore binge and Grey’s Anatomy and Friends aren’t your thing, look no further. Similar to series like Law and Order and NCIS, Criminal Minds features a different case to be solved within each episode. It features a regular cast of loveable characters who travel the country with the FBI to catch the bad guys and save lives.

Supergirl

The superhero craze is sweeping the nation, with the TV series Supergirl one of the latest to join the mix. Kara Danvers is Superman’s cousin. In order to protect National City, she steps out of hiding to reveal her true powers and take her place as a hero. Appropriate for all ages, this show puts a spotlight on sexism and shows young feminists that they can be just as brave and powerful as anyone.
