When thinking of holidays, one often imagines a lively celebration with dressing up and exuberant festivities. After all, holidays are a great opportunity to gather together for a good time. Despite this, holiday cheer is at an all-time low. Unfairly labeled “nonessential”, so many holidays have slipped through the cracks. No holiday is minor, and it’s time for holiday spirit to make a comeback.
Holidays aren’t so much underappreciated as they are simply forgotten. Cell phones are making paper calendars obsolete and people no longer know when a holiday is coming. Paper calendars have an advantage over cell phone calendars because they recognize all holidays. Subsequently, people are unaware when a holiday is approaching.
Finding new ways to honor holidays plays a major part in kindling holiday spirit. However, in past decades holidays have remained virtually the same thus losing their excitement. Perhaps dressing up as a president for Presidents Day, carrying a groundhog everywhere in honor of Groundhog’s Day, or dressing up like our planet for Earth Day would increase enthusiasm on these “minor” holidays. Until people come up with new ways to celebrate holidays, they will remain under recognized.
To increase holiday spirit for all holidays, people must be more aware of the upcoming dates and celebrations must be amplified. If the public were to follow these simple steps, then there would be more holiday cheer everywhere.
