The boys varsity soccer team faced off against the Western Wildcats on Thursday, December 1st. The final score of the game was 1-1.
In the first quarter of the game, the Western Wildcats controlled the game. They were in the Cowboys’ half and pressured them hard. The Cowboys defended really well and prevented the Wildcats from getting a shot on goal. The Cowboys started to pick it up towards the end of the first quarter.
“We need to get better at trusting one another and not second guessing everything,” Senior William Upegui said.
The Cowboys were in control of the game in the second quarter, and made combination plays down to the goal. The Cowboys had two shots on goal, but both of them hit the crossbar. They constantly challenged the Wildcats and didn’t let them past their defense. The half ended with a score of 0-0.
In the third quarter, the game was going back and forth. Both teams had two opportunities of goal, and the passing wasn’t consistent. The Cowboys and Wildcats continued to test each other, but neither team scored.
In the final quarter of the game, both teams began to play their hardest. The Cowboys fouled a Western player outside the 18-yard box, and the Wildcats received a free kick. The Western player had a hard shot that curved into the goal, making the score 0-1. The goal made the Cowboys determined to score a goal. Junior Tomas Upegui received a ball down the line from senior Alonso Mendoza and took a shot on goal, making the score 1-1. The Cowboys continued to defend until the very last minute, ending the game with their heads high.
“We didn’t play how we are accustomed to, played subpar to our actual level,” Mendoza said. “We managed to come back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game up. I hope the team comes back together and perform much better.”
Final Score: Cowboys 1, Western 1
