Thirty students auditioned on Tuesday, February 1st to compete for the chance to be a contestant in Cooper City High School’s 3rd annual Cowboy Idol.

Junior Barry Meadows made it to the next round of the competition.

Cowboy Idol is a singing competition put on by our very own CCHS’ Lariat Newspaper and already has students buzzing with excitement. The show is a way for talented singers to showcase their voices and have a chance to perform in front of their classmates and peers.

Cowboy Idol is a major fundraiser for the Lariat, who is currently working on creating their first full color magazine. The proceeds from the show will gotoward the new magazine that will be issued to students later this month. Last years winner, Nate Promkul, gained much recognition for his performance, going on to star as Link Larkin in CCHS’s recent production of Hairspray.

The contestants auditioned in the media center right after school and these students were in it to win it. The students waited wait in line until it was their turn to sing in front of judges Alyssa Fisher, Afton Hicks, Beatrice Dupuy, Kayla Lokeinsky, and Sydney Altman, all of whom are editors for the Lariat.

Senior Marc Sorrentino belting it out for the judges.

The contestants were asked to sing the first minute of their selected song. When their time was up and they left the room, the judges mulled over the merits of the performance and compiled a list of favorites from which they eventually picked the finalists.

“It was a really tough decision,” junior Alyssa Fisher said. “Our school is full of talent.”

Although some students came to conquer a goal, others have planned to audition and have been looking forward to try-outs for a while. For some, Cowboy Idol is all about singing their heart out for their own enjoyment.

“I was in the show last year and I had a great time so I figured I would do it again,” Sophomore Aicha Fall said.

Singing is something Fall is passionate about and being in Cowboy Idol is just one way she can continue to pursue her passion. Fall plans to sing Beautiful by Christina Aguilera to bring back an old classic.
