As the deadline for graduation creeps closer, CCHS guidance helps to alleviate tensions associated with college. On the 14th, guidance opened a college door decorating contest for personalization classes.

“We are so excited to introduce this project,” BRACE advisor Christine Siwek said. “We hope to get seniors and underclassmen  excited about college, and explore one of their choices in depth.”

The contest aims to motivate students to graduate and get excited about colleges. Because of the way the contest is judged, based on original design, handmade decor, and creative designs, it forces participants to come up with creative ideas that are streamlined with  college themes or colors.

Projects like these aim for every graduating class to get maximum graduation rates. When students get excited about colleges, they are taking the first steps to preparing for their future. They combat the phenomenon of ‘senioritis,’ where seniors start to get lazier in the final stretch.

“We are looking for 100% graduation rate this year,” guidance counselor Clara Neeks said. “We’ve gotten really close last year, but this year looks even more promising. This is just another way we are promoting that goal.”

Many teachers are already planning ahead for door decorations.

“As an FSU alumni, I’m taking this competition very seriously,” said math teacher Mrs. Harding. “My personalization class doesn’t have a choice which college they are promoting. Florida State is the best!’

Indeed, the contest has already sparked discussion about college and many students are taking the chance to dig around prospect colleges.

The door window must not be obscured for safety reasons. Other than that, participants have complete creative freedom to do whatever they choose, including  anything from streamers to 3D art. The winning personalization period,  decided on November 18th, will receive a pizza party.

“We hope to get a great turn out and see some really fun doors,” Mrs. Neeks said.
