“Grey’s Anatomy” returned to ABC with a two-hour premiere of its 15th season on September 27. The show follows the lives of the diverse doctors who work at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle. Unsurprisingly, season 15 dove right into the dramatic lives of each returning character.
The series is known for placing its characters in risky situations. In the premiere, doctors Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) were walking toward the hospital when a car appeared out of nowhere and almost crashed into them. DeLuca pushed them out of the way, ultimately saving their lives, yet it still resulted in the injury of two female bystanders.
This scene was overdramatic in the sense that special effects caused Avery and Pierce to appear like they were flying, making the accident seem unrealistic. However, the results of the accident were critical to the plot.
Unfortunately, Avery and Pierce’s relationship developed throughout the episode. Being that Avery was previously married to April Kepner (Sarah Drew), a fan favorite, the progression of his relationship with Pierce is not favored by “Japril” supporters.
A new season brought new characters to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Orthopedic surgeons Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) and Nico Kim (Alex Landi) are both attractive additions. Link immediately took an interest in Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and this flirtatious relationship will likely progress throughout the season.
Many romantic relationships developed throughout the episode. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) had been raising a teenage mother and baby together in the past season, leading them to move in with one another. It was not shocking that they would eventually rekindle their love affair.
Things became complicated when Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) returned from Germany to become the new Interim Chief. In the previous season, Hunt and Altman had an on-and-off long-distance relationship. Altman has now returned to Seattle with some shocking news: she is pregnant. One can assume that Hunt is the father. This is bound to create a conflict between Hunt’s two love interests, Shepherd and Altman.
Altman declined the job offer to be interim chief, after seeing that Hunt was back with Shepherd. Although Meredith Grey would have been a perfect choice, Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) was selected.
Meredith Grey, the main character, was single throughout season 14. In this episode, her patient, Cece, was a matchmaker who took an interest in Grey’s personal life. Although hesitant to discuss her love life with her patient, Grey eventually caved in. Grey’s previous partner, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), was a fan favorite, and his death was heartbreaking for viewers. Watching Grey move on will be difficult, but will help her develop more as a character.
This season is said to be “the season of love,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Throughout the premiere, many relationships developed. The episode is a must-watch, with many exciting scenes and characters. Despite some over-dramatic moments and unfavorable love affairs, this episode was entertaining to watch.
