Boys Varsity Lacrosse: CCHS Plays A Tough Game Against Western Wildcats

On Monday, February 27, the Cooper City Cowboys faced off against their rivals, the Western Wildcats. The game was extremely intense, with the Cowboys winning in sudden death overtime. The score of the game ended in a tie of 13-13, but the Cowboys were able to defeat the Wildcats.

The Wildcats came out strong, winning the first face off of the game. They moved it around the attack and scored an early goal. They began to dominate the faceoff and pressured the Cowboys defense. Western quickly scored three more goals. Cooper won the next faceoff after that and moved it down to the attack. Freshman Kadin Schillo took a hard shot above the goalies head and scored the first goal for the Cowboys. The Cowboys won the next face off again and passed the ball around. Junior Anthony Carmona passed the ball to senior Luke O’Malley who scored the second goal. Cooper won the next face off but then lost possession of the ball. Western took a shot on goal but senior Brogan Ness saved the shot. Ness threw the ball but Western recovered it and scored another goal. The Cowboys gained possession again and moved the ball around. Senior Craig Barr saw an opening on goal and took a shot, making the score 3-5. Western won the next face off and took many shots. Ness saved as many as he could but Western was able to put another in the back of the net.

Western came out strong once again, winning the first faceoff. They were able to take a shot, but Ness saved the shot. Cooper started to pass the ball around but lost possession quickly. Western took the ball down and scored a quick shot. The Wildcats won the next faceoff and took another shot on goal, but Ness saved it and threw it down to Barr. Barr took a shot on goal, making the score 4-7. Cooper City won the next face off and moved the ball around. Carmona began to test the defense and was able to beat his defender, scoring a goal for the Cowboys. Western retaliated with a quick goal. Soon after, Cooper City was able to put two goals in the back of the net. The Wildcats won the next faceoff and attempted to pass it down but junior Tyler Lewis intercepted the ball and passed it to Barr. Barr missed his shot and Western brought it back down. Ness saved the shot and passed it down to Schillo. Schillo ripped a shot on goal and made it, making the score 8-8 just before the half ended. The fans went wild and were screaming with excitement.

The Cowboys came out extremely strong in the second half, but the Wildcats were able to win the first faceoff. Western scored an early goal, making the goal 8-9. Cooper won the next ball and ran it down towards the attack. Schillo beat his defender and took a hard shot at the goal, tying up the game. The Cowboys won the next face off and ran it down. Carmona took a shot and missed, but the Cowboys still had possession. Barr passed it to sophomore Jack O’Malley who placed it right over the goalies head. Western came back quickly, winning the next face off and scoring. Western won the next face off but Lewis intercepted a pass and passed it down to junior Giodanni D’attilio. He passed it to Schillo, who took a shot but pissed. The Cowboys still contained possession and passed it around. Barr had the ball and saw he had a shot on goal, shooting to the upper left corner, making the score 11-10. “It felt great to finally beat them my senior year,” Barr said. Western won the next face off and tied up the game. Sophomore Ryan Garcia won the next face off and passed it to Carmona. Carmona ripped a shot but missed. Western gained possession and ran it towards the Cooper City defense. Ness saved a hard shot made by Western and passed it down to Barr. Barr started to run the ball down when a Western player tripped him. Both teams were fighting extremely hard for the win.

The game was close with very little time left. Western won the first face off and ran it down. One of the players took a shot but missed, giving the Cowboys possession. Barr took a shot on goal but hit the pipe and the ball bounced off. Barr gained possession back and saw senior Luke O’Malley open, passing him the ball. O’Malley placed the ball right in between the goalies legs, making the score 12-11. Western won the next face off and took a shot on goal but missed. They still had possession and took another shot, but Ness saved it and passed it to Barr. Barr took a shot but missed, giving the Wildcats possession of the ball. Schillo defended the player who had the ball and knocked the ball out of his stick. Carmona picked the ground ball up and passed it around. Carmona got the ball taken and Western took it down to the goal, making the score 12-12. The Cowboys got the ball back quickly and scored again to make the score 13-12. Western won the next face off and ran it down, but Lewis intercepted the ball again and ran the ball down. “I think everyone fought really hard during the game,” Lewis said. “It felt great to beat a team like Western.” Cooper moved the ball around but Western took it. With fifty seconds left, the Wildcats were able to put the ball in the back of the net, making the score of the game 13-13.

The Cowboys and Wildcats had to go into sudden death overtime. The captains from each team stood in the middle of the field and listened to what the referees had to say. The Cowboys ran out onto the field, nervous but ready to win. Cooper City was the face off and ran it down to the attack, they moved the ball around. Schillo had the ball in his stick and beat one of his defenders, taking a hard shot from very far out. The ball was moving so fast that the fans could barely see it hit the back of the net. The buzzer went off and the Cowboys sprinted onto the field, jumping with excitement on top of their teammate. The Cowboys left everything out on the field, and in the end they got the result they wanted.

Final Score: Cooper City 14, Western 13
