On Friday, September 2nd, the Cooper City Cowboys made way to Coral Springs High School to face off against the Colts. Falling short just a few points, the Cowboys lost the second game of the season with a score of 27-33, putting them at 1-1 for the season.
In the beginning of the game, the Cowboys started off strong with a 26 yard field goal by #28 Justin Sanchez, putting the score at 3-0. The Cowboys’ defense held up strong, not letting the Colts’ offense into the endzone. The Cowboys and the Colts continuously challenged one another until the final minutes of the quarter. The Cowboys left the first quarter leading 3-0.
The Colts came out quick in the second quarter with a 17 yard run, making the first touchdown of the game, leaving the score 3-7. The Cowboys didn’t give up hope, quickly recovering with a touchdown by Junior Quarterback Michael Diliello, making the score 10-7. Senior Justin Croye caught a 10 yard throw and turned it into a 30 yard play, giving the Cowboys an advantage.
“There wasn’t anyone that stood out,” Croye said. “We all played as a unit with a common goal to beat Coral Springs.”
Croye was right. The Cowboys didn’t give up then, soon after another field goal was made by Sanchez, putting the Cowboys 6 points ahead. The Cowboys left the first half with heads high.
Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the Colts came out dominating the second half. The Colts scored the first touchdown, making a 70 yard run to put the score at 13-14. Coming close to the last quarter, senior Frankie Machado was open down the field and made the catch to put the Cowboys in range to score another touchdown.
“There are some things we need to work on,” said Machado. “But even though we didn’t win I think we played a good game and fought hard.”
The Cowboys, refusing to back down, scored another touchdown by leading receiver of the game, #10 Christian Cuenca. But the Cowboy defense was unable to keep up with the Colts, leading to another touchdown, which put Coral Springs in the lead to end the third quarter.
With the game coming close to an end, the Colts score another touchdown, putting the score at 19-27. Still fighting hard, the Cowboys gained another touchdown, and then attempted a two-point conversion. As expected, Diliello completed the pass to Cuenca to tie the game at 27-27. Sadly, the Colts retaliated, making the score 27-33.
“It turned out to be a great game,” Croye said. “I believe that both teams played their hearts out.”
At the end of the day, the Cowboys fell short have high hopes for the future.
