There are some updates to the school’s policy on exemptions. At the Lariat, we try to keep the student body informed. Hopefully this guide will shine some light on the new policy and answer and questions students may have.

New Grading/Exemption Scale

Quarter and Semester grades are no longer averaged as percents, instead equating a Quarter average to its letter equivalent. Thus, an 89% would be equivalent to a B+ while a 90% would be equated to an A. One must have a B or higher in both quarters to be eligible for exemption of any given midterm exam. If an exempted midterm’s value equates to an A, it will still not raise an A/B average in a class to an A. Students must actually take the exam and score an A on it to raise an A/B average.

Exemptions

Students are allowed to exempt classes that they have received at least a B in in both the first and second quarter. “High-stakes testing” classes cannot be exempted, of which includes Advanced Placement courses, EOC/EOI courses such as Biology 1 and Geometry, SAT and College preparatory courses, and English 9 and 10 (due to the spring FSA ELA assessment).

Schedule

The Monday of Midterm week is a normal school day set in place as a review day. The rest of the testing week is as follows:

The week after Winter Break, while still recognized by the county as a part of the second quarter, has been set aside by Cooper City High as the unstated beginning of the third quarter. Grades do not close for the second quarter until the returning Friday however, so students are able to make up second quarter work after returning from Winter Break.
