Review: Glee – The Quarterback

On October 10th, Glee fans sat down with a box of much needed tissues to watch the Glee episode titled The Quarterback, an episode which paid tribute to Cory Monteith, who passed away this summer from heroin and alcohol overdose. On the show, Monteith portrayed main character Finn Hudson. In The Quarterback, the characters deal with the grief from loosing Fin and hold a memorial in his honor.
Glee star Corey Monteith was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver on July 13, 2013, at the age of 31. The cause of death was reported to be “a mixed drug toxicity” which appeared to be accidental. At his time of death Glee had been about to begin shooting its 5th season.
In the episode, Glee club alumni go back to McKinley High School and join the current members to pay tribute to Finn in song. Through ought the episode they dedicate songs to him and remember their favorite things about him.
The Cast and crew of Glee gave Monteith a beautiful send off with heart felt touching songs and gut wrenching performances. All the tears shed in the episode were real, emotional and raw. The opening song “Seasons of Love” was sung by a majority of the cast and was spine chilling. Rachel Berry, Finns girl friend played by Lea Michelle who was Monteiths girlfriend in real life sung a touching rendition of “Make You Feel My Love”. Although she was singing to Finn, the grief that she showed was for Corey. Other characters also showed their support by singing songs such as ” If I Die Young” by Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) and “Ill Stand By You” by Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley).
One of most gut wrenching moments came at the end of the episode when Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) the glee club teacher finally succumbed to his own emotions and bawled while clutching Finns lettermen jacket. Overall the episode was the perfect blend of sad and sweet, it was everything a Glee/Corey Monteith fan could ask for. While goodbye is the hardest word to say, Glee did a phenomenal job with their final farewell to Corey Monteith.
