On Friday, November 9th, The Cooper City Cowboys varsity football team faced the Flanagan Falcons in an emotional final game of the season.

In the beginning of the game, the teams fought with equivalent determination; neither team allowing the opponent to score. It wasn’t until junior Michael Keys intercepted the ball on a Falcon second down late in the first quarter that junior Jarrett Morgan made the first touchdown of the game for the Cowboys.

The second quarter was when the Falcons started to catch up. Following a touchdown run by junior Sean Pratt, the Falcons snuck past the Cowboy defense and scored a 70-yard touchdown. With three minutes left in the quarter both teams buckled down and defended against each prospective touchdown. By halftime, the score was 14-7, the Cowboys leading.

The third quarter gradually turned into a nail-biter. With two minutes left in the quarter, the game looked positive for the Cowboys. When, all of the sudden, the Falcons offense made another touchdown. The Falcons field goal attempt was unsuccessful and put the score at a close 14-13.

It finally came down to the fourth quarter. Immediately Morgan scored again. The clock was running as both teams continued making failed plays. With under two-minutes left, the Falcons made a touchdown and earned a two-point conversion. The teams were tied. Junior Kalieal Ruffin then ran a touchdown followed by a field goal by Senior Jeremy Moss, which broke the score. In the final seconds of the game the crowd was then brought to the edge of their seats as the Falcons made a touchdown. The falcons attempted a field goal that resulted in a missed extra point. The buzzer went off and the Cowboys went wild.

This intense game wrapped up a great season for the Cowboys with a final score of 28-27, the last Cowboy win of the 2012 season.

The Cowboys overall record this season was 5-5 and they are currently ranked 193rd in the state.

“We did better than a lot of people expected this season, ” Coach Art Taylor said. “I knew we had it in us.”

Though it was a good season, Taylor has high hopes for what’s to come in the future for the Cooper City Cowboy’s program.

“I’m looking forward to having a big return next year,” Taylor said. “I can’t wait to start preparing.”
