Cooper City Cowboys Varsity football added a second loss onto their record after a much-anticipated game against the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks. The rivals faced off in four quarters filled with tension, which ultimately ended in a Maverick victory.
The Maverick offense came out strong, scoring only a few minutes into the first quarter with a pass by quarterback Michael Armiento to receiver Ryan Selimos. With the kick for the extra point, they set the score at 7-0. The Cowboys were able to hold back the Maverick offense for the majority of the first quarter until Maverick Juwan King ran it in 2 yards for the second touchdown of the game. Maverick Marshall Morgan cleared the goal post for the extra point making the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Cowboys offense got back in the groove in the second quarter with a touchdown by wide receiver Blake Michaels at 8:30. With the extra point, they lessened the gap in score to 7. However, the Maverick offense did not take kindly to this, and with five minutes left in the first half they pushed another three points ahead of the Cowboys with a field goal kick by Morgan. The first half ended with a score of 17-7.
The Maverick offense continued to push hard going into the second half. A 67-yard run by Michael Pearce and a second touchdown at the 3:52 mark of third quarter put the Cowboys behind 31-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Mavericks continued to make attempts to run up the score. A second field goal by Morgan put them up over Cooper City with a 27-point lead. Even with a definite loss, the Cowboys were determined to finish the game strong. With 1:33 left in the game, quarterback Myles Notkin ran in for the touchdown. Ending the game with a score of 34-13.
Though the Cowboys lost on the scoreboard, they won in the hearts of their fans. Clearly the more respectable team of the night, they left the stadium with a 4-2 record and the determination to triumph next Friday October 22nd in a district game against Coconut Creek High School.
