Review: You Me At Six – Sinners Never Sleep

For a band that has been touring since 2006, You Me at Six have come a long way. From their first album, Take Off Your Colours, to their newest release Sinners Never Sleep, it is easy to see just how much this band has grown and matured. Their new, edgy sound on this album is sure to attract a more rock and roll crowd. Although their music may have shifted, the band has produced another outstanding album.

Sinners Never Sleep has songs that can appeal to all types of music lovers everywhere. As a whole, the album has a hard rock vibe. Lyrically, the songs are about going through life, relationships, and growing up. The songs “Loverboy” and “Jaws on the Floor” start the album off on a high note. These two songs set the tone, making a powerful statement for what’s to come.

The songs “Bite My Tongue”, featuring Oli Sykes from Bring Me the Horizon, and “Time is Money”, featuring Winston McCall from Parkway Drive definitely unveil a dark side. The bold vocals combined with brutally honest lyrics makes for two amazing songs. They show off a heavier side that hasn’t been seen on previous albums..

In contrast, the songs “Crash”, “No One Does It Better”,  “This is the First Thing” and “When We Were Younger” are outliers, with a more toned down and mild sound. The songs deal with reminiscing about being young, without the hassle of responsibilities and how relationships change. Although “When We Were Younger” has some repetitive lines, the lyrics hit close to home, talking about how growing up isn’t as easy as it seems. “Little Bit of Truth” is a tribute to the band’s fans, thanking them for their support, something that’s not typically seen. It shows how much they appreciate where they are and how they got there. Although these songs may be slower, they show that the band is capable of diversifying their sound.

The other songs are the pop punk anthems of the album. The lyrics to “Mr. Reckless” are catchy and become imbedded in your mind. “The Dilemma” and “Takes One to Know One” have lighthearted melodies that are fun to listen to. “Little Death” has contrasting beats with an intense chorus. The lyrics have depth and purpose. If you enjoyed You Me at Six’s prior songs, you are sure to appreciate these new ones.

The songs on Sinners Never Sleep are like a diary of the band. It shows what they’ve been through and where they want to go. Whether you’re an old fan or a new one, the album is worth checking out.
