Cooper City’s varsity football team took on the Everglades Gators Friday, September 2nd, in the first game of the season. Following an outstanding preseason game, the Cowboys were victorious once again, ending the game with a score of 21-19.
In the first quarter, the Gators made the first touchdown. After a few fumbles and penalties, the Cowboys called a timeout. With 2 minutes left in the first quarter, senior running back Camden Krohn, scored a touch down, ending the quarter with a score of 7-7.
In second quarter, following a couple of minor penalties that set the Cowboys back by a few yards, freshman defensive tackle Don Quest Tolerant got injured and was out for the rest of the game. With 16 seconds left in the quarter, the Cowboys called another timeout to regroup.
Quarter three started out bright, courtesy of a touchdown from senior linebacker Tyson Burch and a successful punt from senior Brandon Cook. Just as the Cowboys had finally built positive momentum, the Gators came back and scored a touchdown near the end of the third quarter, making the score a close 14-13 with the Cowboys barely in the lead.
Finally, it came down to the fourth quarter. Any sound but the anxious chanting from the fans of both teams was imperceptible. Throughout the quarter, both teams increased their efficiency. There were multiple plays and some great catches from senior wide receiver Jordan Mornay. With 4 minutes left in the quarter, senior wide receiver Justin Ingram made the final touchdown. Two minutes later, the Gators also scored a touchdown. Unfortunately for the Gators, it wasn’t enough to bring down the Cowboys. The last quarter ended with a score 21-19.
“Luckily we won but we could have fixed some mental mistakes that were made,” senior Colton Rosiak said. ”We still have a lot to work on. I know that I, for one, need to work on my focus”.
The Cowboys next game is Friday, September 9th, at 7 p.m. at home against the West Broward Bobcats.
