On Friday March 11, junior Kaylee Oberfield won the National Gold Key for her performance in photography.
The internationally famous artist, Andy Warhol, received this very same award as a high school student, which made winning the award even more of an outstanding gift.
“Having won the same award that other famous artists did is beyond amazing,” Oberfield said. “It makes me think that maybe, if I work really hard, I can become a successful and famous artist as well.”
Oberfield is also receiving 3 round trip plane tickets to New York for her and two guests where her work will be displayed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. There, she will receive her award amongst many other talented young artists. Going with Oberfield on this journey will be her Mom and Uncle Al; who helps her do what she loves.
“My Uncle takes me on photography adventures all around the world to help me build my portfolio,” Oberfield said.
Aside from her supportive family, is her proud photography teacher Katherine Sharp.
“I have had in the past, many students whose works earned Regional Gold Keys,” Sharp said. “Several have earned National Gold Keys, and one other student was named an American Vision Award recipient, which made her one of the top thirteen photography students in the nation, Am I blessed or what?”
After receiving news that Oberfield had won the National Gold Key, Sharp posted a congratulatory message on her homepage for fellow students to see.
Oberfield will receive her award on May 31st at Carnegie Hall. It will then be held on display in a gallery in the heart of New York City.
Until then, Oberfield will continue her photography pieces and amaze those around her with her unique eye for art.
“Winning this award means more than the world to me,” Oberfield said. “Photography is definitely something I will continue to do for the rest of my life.”
