Recapping “WandaVision”: Everything you need to know up until episode seven

COVID-19 has halted the filming of various movies and shows, with Marvel being one of many studios heavily affected. Fans have been anticipating anything Marvel-related to watch for the past year. At last, the long wait came to an end when the first Marvel Studios show, “WandaVision,” was announced to be released via Disney+ on January 15, 2021. Now, the show is seven episodes in, with the seventh premiering on February 19, and it’s a whole lot to process.

It has been a while, so remembering everything that’s been going on is hard. True Marvel fans have an understanding, but for new Marvel viewers, it can be quite confusing. Here’s the backstory:

During “Avengers: Infinity War,” Thanos snapped his fingers, turning half the population to dust. The Avengers, and many more, came together to undo this snap in “Avengers: Endgame.” The Avengers went through a lot of suffering to get everything back to normal. Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, seemed to have suffered the most. 

Wanda originally got her powers after volunteering to be experimented on, with her brother Pietro, by the head of terrorist organization Hydra Baron Von Strucker in her home of Sokovia. She has telekinesis, can control minds and is very emotional, which can be a deadly combination. 

A synthetic android by the name of Vision was created to fight against a deadly robot, Ultron. Ultron wanted to give himself a body to be stronger, but the Avengers stole that body and put Tony’s right-hand artificial intelligence (AI) system, J.A.R.V.I.S., in the body. This was the creation of Vision.

Wanda and Vision began falling in love throughout “Captain America: Civil War.” By the time “Avengers: Infinity War” came around, they were finally together romantically. To stop Thanos’s plan, the team realized that they needed all the Infinity Stones, one being the mind stone, which was inside Vision. Vision died to help save humanity, but it broke Wanda.

Now into WandaVision. Wanda essentially created a whole town for her and Vision to live in. But how is he alive? Wanda stole his body from a Sentient World Observant and Response Department (SWORD) facility and somehow brought him back to life—it’s still unknown how she did this. Wanda has been mind-controlling all the civilians in the town of Westview simultaneously. 

Agent Monica Rambeau, daughter of Captain Marvel’s best friend, Maria Rambeau, is one of the SWORD agents on the case. Early on, she was seen meeting up with agent Jimmy Woo, who was first seen in the film “Ant-Man.” Monica was sucked into Wanda’s world, pretending to be Wanda’s neighbor named Geraldine. Later, in a scene after Wanda gives birth to her children, Monica accidentally brings up Ultron, making Wanda suspicious because none of the mind-controlled civilians should know that. Wanda realized that Geraldine wasn’t supposed to be there. She yells at Monica to leave her alone and blasts her out of Westview.

At a random point, Wanda’s brother Pietro, who died in the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” waltzes into her house. Wanda seemed confused about this because she knew she was controlling everything, but she had never brought Pietro back. Episode seven revealed that this was “Agatha all along,” a jingle no one can get out of their heads.

Vision became suspicious of the town they’re in. He flew towards the edge of the town and observed the “edge people.” Because they’re not interacting with Wanda, they stand still. Vision tried communicating with them, but they remained unresponsive.

Wanda and Vision have a neighbor named Agnes who always seemed to linger. Regular viewers knew something was odd about her, but Marvel comic fans knew exactly who she was from the beginning. She wasn’t Agnes, she was Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch. This was proven true in episode seven. 

Meanwhile, on the outside, Director of SWORD Tyler Hayward was working with the team. Darcy Lewis, Jane Foster’s assistant from the movie “Thor,” was brought in to help investigate the “hex,” as Darcy calls it. Hayward and Monica disagreed on how to handle the situation because Monica doesn’t see Wanda as the villain, but Hayward does. He kicked Darcy, Jimmy and Monica off the team for this. 

After being kicked off the base, they snuck back in to see what Hayward was up to. Darcy discovered that he was tracking Vision. She noticed Vision trying to break out of the hex so she ran outside to see what was happening. On the inside, one of Wanda’s kids, Billy, had the ability to sense that Vision was in agonizing pain and Wanda knew that he was trying to escape. She began expanding her hex, sucking Darcy into Westview. 

Through all this, Monica was going back into the hex to try to help Wanda before Hayward got to her first. Monica found Wanda and they got into a confrontation. Entering the hex for a second time, Wanda rewrote Monica’s DNA, giving her superpowers. Wanda told Monica and SWORD to leave her home.

Agatha appeared out of nowhere, offering Wanda support. She took Wanda into her home, where Tommy and Billy were supposed to be, but they were nowhere to be seen. Wanda walks around trying to find them, but finds herself in Agatha’s basement. Agatha appears, with purple in her eyes saying “Wanda, Wanda, you didn’t think you were the only magical girl in town, did you?”  

The scene ends, but for the first time in “WandaVision” there was a post-credit scene. Monica is seen snooping around Agatha’s house, but is caught by a fake Pietro. Marvel comic fans are suspecting that Mephisto, a villain Wanda and Vision face in the comics, might come into play in the show. Fake Pietro or Hayward could be Mephisto. Ultron could somehow be alive, taking the form of Hayward’s body, which could be the reason he was tracking Vision in the hex. 

Where are Tommy and Billy? What did Pietro do to Monica? What’s going to happen with Agatha now that she has Wanda? Hopefully these questions get some answers after episode eight.
