Professional Study Days (PSDs) have gone the way of the dinosaur in February 2021. Born in 2013, these early release days were created to provide teachers with time to edit their curriculum, as well as for students to have a day each month to manage their workload.
PSDs allowed teachers and students to end their school day at 11:40 a.m., and then perform other school-related activities for the rest of the day. These days were the first Thursday of each month, and there were eight of these days in total, spanning until the end of April.
These days may be used for students and teachers alike to care for their mental health, as well as have a “Friday before Friday.” The PSD almost acted as an impromptu weekend, giving more time for students and teachers to relax and get things done.

For many years since 2013, PSDs gave CCHS teachers and students something to look forward to each month. These days aided students in handling their school work, and allowed for teachers to collaborate and plan for lessons.
However, that was before the removal of the PSD for Broward County Public Schools. The remaining early release days are canceled moving forward, with little news of a return for the 2020-2021 school year. After February 18, 2021, there will be no days off until spring break.
Students and teachers are denied the breaks they’re accustomed to. Not only did we lose the days we longed for, but we also lost the productivity that we could’ve had on those days. Teachers and students have to plan their calendars far ahead for the next true day off.
Unfortunately, students and teachers will have to live through this dark period without break, and yearn for the next one.

There is no alternative solution. There are no shortcuts. This is the new way of life, one that CCHS students will have to get used to, at least for the 2021 school year.
After many years of being accustomed to PSD, students and teachers have reached the end of its lifespan, or so we are to think. There has been no real news on the future of PSD, so one has to simply hope for the best.
In the meantime, Rest In Peace PSDs.
