Neighbors supporting neighbors: Cooper City neighborhood celebrates “Sunday Funday,” social distancing style

On April 26 and May 3, the Cooper City neighborhood of Country Address hosted a “Sunday Funday” event with the intention of getting residents out of their homes while maintaining social distancing guidelines. Food, music and good vibes were advertised to get neighbors to come enjoy an afternoon on the lake with their community and lift each other’s spirits during the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic. 

“[“Sunday Funday” was] great outdoor fun for my family and I to take a break from days of quarantining whilst getting some much needed vitamin D,” neighborhood resident Lucy Comprosky said. “It was much appreciated how our community came together and followed social distancing rules so that we could all safely enjoy some music and great food.”

On a floating dock, one resident cruised around the lake in the center of the neighborhood while playing music and inviting others to join. Families gathered on the water to enjoy the scene from their personal docks, canoes and backyards. Some even brought lawn chairs and picnic blankets to sit and hang out from the grassy bank.

“Some of the people in the neighborhood put together a party on the lake so people were able to keep their distance. There were food trucks and a DJ, so a lot of the people who participated had a good time,” CCHS senior and neighborhood resident Maxwell Jeffries said. “I think it was a positive experience for the community during these crazy times.”

On Sunday, May 3, the neighborhood was able to bring food trucks to the second “Sunday Funday” event and it was a huge hit among residents. 

“My favorite part of the afternoon was getting to enjoy the music and food with my family and neighbors,” Jeffries said.

Residents wore masks and passed out individual bottles of complimentary hand sanitizer–an item becoming increasingly hard to come by in stores across the nation– to the residents of Country Address. Residents were thus able to participate in the event by taking necessary precautions to do so safely.

“The Sunday lake day really brings the community together as a whole,” CCHS senior and neighborhood resident Karissa Trippe said. “Especially in a time like this, we need to support each other.”

Families liked the idea of a socially-distanced “Sunday Funday” and were able to get out of the house for some fresh air to ease their minds of the pandemic. Kicking the week off on the lake at an event serving ‘good vibes,’ the people of Country Address were able to remain positive while quarantining and social distancing.
