The coronavirus is interrupting both school and spring sports. Right now, the future of school sports is uncertain and the Cowboys have many concerns. Student-athletes responded to the question: “How is the coronavirus affecting the athletes at CCHS?”
Senior Ethan Silverman, volleyball
“It sucks that my senior season is most likely canceled. It really does. There is a high chance that I won’t have a senior night and we were undefeated and looked like we were going to win districts. But we needed to do what had to be done. The best thing for all of us is that we are healthy and safe. I would take the sacrifice of not playing again if it means that I’m healthy.”
Sophomore Sydney Totarsky, softball
“Right now, the softball team is fifth in the nation and undefeated. We were expecting a good season and now it looks like it’s over. Our team has great chemistry and [the coronavirus] is putting a pause on this season. It has us all really upset. We had big things coming our way and hopefully, we can keep playing this season.”
Junior Jake Glantz, lacrosse
“I’m really upset about the current situation in regards to the virus and social distancing. We had a really interesting and fun season going on, and this whole virus really stopped the season’s momentum.”
Senior Ryley Edmunds, water polo
“It sucks because all teams can’t finish their seasons and play in districts and upper-level competitions which they have been training hard for. It also sucks because the polo team lost their last game to Cypress Bay and now we can never live that down.”
Senior Kaia Keppel, flag football
“Everything that’s happening is really disappointing. We’ve looked forward to this season in particular for the last 4 years, and it’s just really sad to think that it all ended so quickly. It’s supposed to be the year that you play your best and for many, it’s the last time we will play the sports we love.”
No matter what grade level the athletes are in, there is an uneasy feeling regarding sports and what may happen to their seasons. The coronavirus could not only ruin a winning season, but it could ruin someone’s last season.
