Time is crunching down until graduation and seniors are in the midst of saying goodbye to high school. This past week, the Class of 2019 hosted the annual Senior Spirit Week, a spirit week exclusive to seniors which led up to prom on May 4. For five days, seniors dressed up in themes that resemble their future such as “future career day,” where they dressed in the attire of their preferred profession.
“We put together a Senior Week for the seniors so they can enjoy one last spirit week before we all graduate,” Class of 2019 President Robin Zide said.
Senior Week means something different to every senior, from the joy of dressing up to celebrating the near end of high school with friends.
“I decided to participate in Senior Week because it’s a time for me to really showcase my flair and my individuality, while also supporting my senior class, specifically my friends that I’ve made over the past four years,” senior Aliceon Clemmensen said. “It’s a great opportunity to just have fun and be me.”
Senior Spirit Week is celebratory and commemorative, but also a farewell to high school and to childhood; the last few paragraphs before the chapter is officially closed at graduation. Some seniors, however, feel more commemorative rather than nostalgic.
“It’s a great opportunity to just have fun and be me.”
“I think [Senior Spirit Week] is commemorative since it is our last two weeks of high school and it allows us to be spirited together,” Prom King Gio Abril said.
Although Senior Spirit Week collided with ninth grade English Language Arts (ELA) FSA testing on Wednesday and Thursday, causing many seniors to skip out on school, the turnout of Senior Spirit Week participants was not poor.
“I was pretty satisfied with the turnout of participation,” Zide said. “I think everyone was excited to enjoy their very last high school spirit week.”
Much like the Homecoming Spirit Week that leads up to the Homecoming Dance, the Senior Spirit Week leads up to prom, which many seniors were looking forward to throughout the week.
“I think everyone was excited to enjoy their very last high school spirit week.”
Senior Week is about creating lasting memories of the last fleeting moments of high school and being together as a class for one of the last times.
“I think [Senior Spirit Week is a good way to send off seniors because] it allows us to do something together during school as well as prom,” Abril said.
The Class of 2019’s Senior Spirit Week proved to be a success and pretty soon the Class of 2020 will be participating in their own Senior Week. The rising seniors have plenty of classes that came before them to look at for examples and inspiration.
“The only advice I would have for future class officers is to promote as soon as you can, so that seniors are aware of the week and can prepare for it,” Zide said.
Seniors united as a class this past week for their very last high school spirit week and were able to end it with one last hoorah, prom.
