The Cooper City High School girls and boys golf team opened up their season with three straight victories. After a devastating loss to begin, the team turned around to win their following tournaments.
The season began with a loss. The team failed to top Western High School in their season opener. However, the Cowboys quickly changed that.
The second game, which resulted in a win against South Broward, gave the team some hope. The players showed significant improvement, with a better technique and attitude. The following week proved to be even more successful.
Their first tournament of the week took place on Tuesday, September 11 at 3:30 p.m. The team traveled to Fort Lauderdale Country Club, where they played Nova High School.
“The team is full of great golfers who are very talented,” Avin said. “Hopefully we will go far this year.”
One notable player was freshman Kennan O’Malley, who helped the team tremendously. O’Malley has played golf since middle school and took no time adjusting to the high school level competition. He admitted that while the season didn’t begin well, it was improving.
“We started off slow,” O’Malley said. “But we’ve gotten into a good rhythm over the past few matches.”
The Cowboys followed up the victory with a tournament closer to home. The team competed on Thursday, September 13 at Flamingo Lakes Golf Course directly after school. The Cowboys took on Plantation and West Broward High School.
Freshman Adam Avin stuck out during the match as well. Avin’s contribution to the team allowed the Cowboys to defeat two intense schools. However, he didn’t hesitate to compliment his new teammates, who he believes is responsible for the victory.
“The team is full of great golfers who are very talented,” Avin said. “Hopefully we will go far this year.”
The Cowboys compete again on Monday, September 17. With a three to one record, the team appears to be going into the tournament confidently.
As for the remainder of the season, the team remains optimistic that their winning streak will continue. With some more practice, the Cowboys could go far this year.
