Varsity softball: Lady Cowboys beat Mater Academy 10-0 in their first regional game

Having acquired the district title, the Lady Cowboys advanced to the regional quarter-finals. On Wednesday, May 2, the Lady Cowboys faced off against Mater Academy. The Lady Cowboys came out victorious 10-0 after the first five innings.

The Lady Cowboys started their warm up as usual, switching off between hitting and fielding, focusing more on positions as the start time grew closer. At 7 p.m., the game started and the Lady Cowboys faced off against the Mater Academy Lions at Cooper City High school. The game lasted five innings and ended 10-0 with Cooper City moving on to regional semifinals.

As the game started, both teams were figuring each other out, seeing how the pitches were coming and how they hit. The Lions started out at bat, giving them an opportunity to pull ahead in the beginning of the game. The first two innings went by with neither team scoring.

The top of the third inning went quickly, with the Lady Cowboys getting three out on the first three batters. Once at bat, Michelle Adelman doubled on a line drive to the left fielder. Shortly after, Kathrine Claros was able to single on a line drive to center field, bringing home Adelman and ending the bottom of the third 1-0 with the Lady Cowboys ahead.

Amanda Gettys singled on a bunt and was moved to second by Brenna Lokeinsky. Lokeinsky was thrown out at first but Gettys remained at second. Jasmin Herrera hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, bringing home Gettys. Kassandra Espinosa doubled on a line drive to the left fielder and was moved to second after by Adelman.

Bridgette Tuxbury was hit by the pitch right after, moving Adelman to second and loading the bases. Claros hit a ground ball, bringing home Espinosa and Adelman and ending the bottom of the fourth inning 4-0. The Lady Cowboys didn’t waste any time getting back on offense. Cooper City was able to score six more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, ending the game to a run-rule in the fifth inning.

“We played well,” Lokeinsky said. “The game could have ended sooner but [we] are moving onto regional semifinals and hopefully we can continue our drive in regionals and get a chance to play in states.”
