On Tuesday, May 8, the Cooper City Cowboys baseball team brought their season to an end when they lost in the regional quarterfinals to the Westland Hialeah Wildcats. The final score of the game was 5-0. Overall, the baseball team ended with a total of seven wins to 16 losses (7-16). In districts they went 3-3, three wins and losses, but that was not enough to keep them in the regional finals.
This game tested the Cowboys, showing how hard they could work. There was a DJ at the field and bleachers full of fans, creating an atmosphere full of excitement. After a long bus ride down to their game, the Cowboys walked off the bus’s steps and were immediately greeted by fans and parents, ready for the game.
The Cowboys held the Wildcats to a 0-0 game through the first and second innings. It was not until the third inning that the Wildcats put a score on the board, hitting two home runs and making it 0-2. After the third inning, the Wildcats hit three more home runs, leaving the Cowboys far behind in points.
In the fifth and sixth innings, the Cowboys got their heads back in the game and did not allow for any other home runs. The Cowboys gave it their all, but were unable to score any home runs.
The Cowboys gave up some easy bases and made two errors, which gave the Wildcats the upper hand. The Wildcats were also able to get seven hits off of the Cowboy’s pitches. The Cowboys were able to get four hits off.
“The pitching was a big impact on the game,” Cole Avchen said. “They hit the ball well and we did not, which is why they won the game.”
After a long season, the Cowboys managed to keep their heads high and go home. For some players, especially the seniors, the loss was more devastating than it may have been for others.
“It was sad knowing I not only just played my last high school baseball game, but possibly my last game ever,” Avchen said. “I think we could have and should have improved on team chemistry, hitting and fielding, which were some of the key components we lacked.”
Final Score: Cooper City 0, Westland Hialeah 5
