Fourth quarter has yet to begin, but students are already picking out their classes for the 2018-2019 school year.

Course selection cards were passed out to freshmen, sophomores and juniors last week. Along with being anxious about planning for the next school year, many students were surprised to find an array of new classes being offered at CCHS.

Among the new course offerings are Technology for Hospitality and Tourism 2 and Fitness Lifestyle Design/Recreational Activities (Yoga). There will also be several new social studies electives such as Psychology 1 and 2 Local Honors, AP European History and Financial Literacy/American Economic Experience Honors.

It can be overwhelming to pick just seven classes when there are dozens upon dozens of choices. But by introducing new classes, CCHS is expanding the educational opportunities made available to its students.

“[The goal is to] give students more variety in coursework and also to challenge students,” guidance counselor Clara Neeck said. “We are offering a new AP class and Technology for Hospitality and Tourism is a new industry certification. We are offering more for students to become more able to work in the real world.”

Along with the benefits of career preparation, students might find that the new courses will better equip them to deal with a rigorous schedule. Many organizations, such as the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), state that physical activity can reduce stress. Through Fitness Lifestyle Design/Recreational Activities (Yoga), students will be able to relieve academic anxiety by doing the downward facing dog.

“I feel like yoga would be a great stress relief after taking hard classes like AP US History and AP Language,” junior Marianne Wilson said.

Other new classes are highly anticipated because of the unique educational material that they will bring to campus.

Seniors are typically excited that their high school years are coming to an end, even if it is bittersweet. But some are still envious of the courses that underclassmen will have available to them next school year.

“I have always been a big fan of history,” senior Nick Tyler said. “I’ve always loved studying it and looking at it on my own. When I heard that there was an AP European History course from my friends who were in other schools… I was immediately jealous. I was [thinking], ‘I want to have this course.’ Cooper never had it until now.”

If students are unsure about what class would be the best fit for them, they can speak with teachers and upperclassmen to learn more about any classes at CCHS. Students will also be meeting with their guidance counselors in the upcoming weeks to discuss the selections that they have made.

All courses, ranging from music electives to AP core classes, can give students the gift of discovering a talent or unlocking a new perspective. No matter what interests or passions students have, CCHS is likely to have a class that will meet their needs.
