Last Wednesday, January 27th, Cooper City High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) Brain Brawl team competed against Stoneman Douglas High School for the county championship. Though the team lost, they still became champions of the South District of Broward County.
In order to become South District champs, NHS had to find the perfect Brain Brawl team. They held tryouts for NHS students to find the best suitable competitors by testing the students ability to think and answer questions under pressure.
“To win you need to know a little about everything and you need to know it faster than everyone else,” Senior Brain Brawl competitor Bradlee Jeffrey said.
Cooper City High School’s 2011 NHS Brain Brawl team was made up of Jason Leshin, Jeremy Leshin, Bradlee Jeffery, and Matt Shuham. The team prepared by playing trivial pursuit and acquiring sample questions from previous years. They practiced frequently with different trivia categories including art, history, geography, music, and math.
During the competition, two teams of four compete in a double elimination round. A question is asked and one team must buzz in with the correct answer. If the team answers the question correctly, they then have a chance to answer four bonus questions. After 20 questions, the team with the most points at the end wins.
The team competed against 12 other schools in the region and cruised to the finals without defeat, however, Pines Charter gave the team a good fight. In the end the team pulled ahead, to win and become South District Champs.
From districts, CCHS’s team went up against Stoneman Douglas in the county championship, but was defeated in the end. Although they didn’t make it to the state level, CCHS’s NHS Brain Brawl team showed their skills by claiming the title of South District of Broward County champions.
