Taking cues from different cultures around the world, this year’s winter choral concert was a celebration of diversity and holiday spirit. Held within the CCHS cafeteria, a crowd of people gathered on Monday evening to listen to the chorus and their semester cumulative show.
“A different language is a different perspective,” chorus director Anna Lotocky said. “We felt it was important to bring to light the different ways people celebrate the holidays, so our theme this year was Joy Around the World.”
Beginning choir started the night’s performances with a six song routine. They then joined up with the upper level chorus to perform Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride, which also was featured at the variety show.
Dressed in full black, advanced chorus went next and performed classic holiday music, such as Silver Bells, Hallelujah and a karaoke sing along of Jingle Bells for the audience.
One of the most notable songs of the show was Shchedryk, sung in its original Ukrainian. The South African song, Hlonolofatsa was also performed.
“Hlonolofatsa was the strongest of our songs, it was obvious to tell from the risers where we performed,” chorus member Rachel Bata said. “Everyone knew their part and sang it well.”
Contemporary songs were incorporated as well. Billboard frequenters like Sam Smith had their songs covered by the students.
Two songs from the British artist Mika were featured, and touched on mental health issues and self confidence. The goal of this was to bring more perspectives to the audience.
Chorus alumni were invited to sing at the annual winter concert, and their inclusion magnified the voices of the choir.
“Singing with the high schoolers tonight brought back memories of my time in chorus,” alumni Daniel Hernandez said. “Unlike in academic classes, chorus is a chance to express yourself and be part of a team.”
The preparations for the show go back to September. Starting in second hour, Lotocky introduced new songs and materials to her upper and beginner chorus classes. Many different songs were considered for the final product, but only the best made the cut.
“The concert was wonderful and a great start to the holiday season,” principal Wendy Doll said. “I am so excited to see what the Chorus team are capable of in the upcoming semester, and look forward to another great concert.”
