On Thursday, November 9, CCHS and Douglas High School collided with one goal in mind: to win. In the end, Douglas came out on top, winning a very entertaining and competitive game from start to finish with a final score of 1-4.
In the first half, the Lady Cowboys were getting a feel for their opponent as they passed the ball with ease and switched fields, keeping Douglas High School on their toes and alert. Both teams had great talent in all positions, which resulted in a very physical game. The Cowboys fought for every single ball, and made a few lucky plays to break through their opponent’s defense. Douglas had great passing, which made it difficult for the Lady Cowboys to maintain possession. However, that didn’t stop the Lady Cowboys as they continued to pressure Douglas and force them to make a mistake that would give the Lady Cowboys the ball back. Douglas continued to play well despite the pressure and score two goals before halftime.
After a halftime, the Lady Cowboys came out with the determination to get a goal. However, the Douglas’ defense held strong, stopping shot after shot that the Cowboys came after them with. Douglas continued to play their game, capitalizing off of the Cowboys mistakes. Douglas broke through the Lady Cowboys defense again and scored to put them up 0-3, making it a difficult game for the Lady Cowboys to win. The Cowboys had some nice through balls and passes from the midfield towards down the line, which gave themselves a chance to score. Though those chances were not taken advantage of, the Cowboys finally broke through after a fourth goal from Douglas, when freshman Abbi Gilchrist scored. This gave the Cowboys some life, even though there were less than five minutes left. They tried to score as much as possible, but were unsuccessful. In the end, Douglas prevailed winning 1-4, but the Cowboys kept their heads up and looked forward to winning on Monday.
“We played a really tough team and played hard, even with quite a few players who weren’t able to make it,” junior Sarah Megna said. “Once all of our players return we will be able to have an amazing season, hopefully win districts and keep moving from there.”
