On October 12 and 25, the National English Honor Society (NEHS) is holding college essay review sessions at 2:45 in room 4111 to give seniors one on one help with their college personal statements. If students wish to attend, they can sign up for either date on the Google form located on the NEHS website. Walk-ins are welcome, however signing up will assure a spot at the session of your choice.
“I think that it’s beneficial to get another perspective, especially on our own stories and writing,” NEHS sponsor Mr. Grozan said. “One of the things I see with these college essays is that they have a very strict word count. Sometimes it’s good to get another person’s perspective about what’s essential and what can be edited out to meet that word count.”
These college review sessions will be hosted by senior members of NEHS who will edit any college essay for spelling, grammar, structure, and content. Editors will help students make the most of the space they are given and assure that their essays are conveying their best qualities and assets. Seniors can bring in either their laptops or a hard copy of their work to be edited.
“Our objective is to help our peers reflect their personalities and assets to college admission officers in a fresh way,” NEHS senior Sarah Sarver said. “In revising sessions, NEHS members pursue this goal by helping others word their essays more clearly and concisely; we try to help them put their best foot forward in that tiny, 500-word shoes.”
This is the second year in which these review sessions have been offered to college applicants. National English Honors Society jump-started this project to give seniors a chance to have a fresh set of eyes view their essays. Since teachers may not have time to view everyone’s essay who might need edits, NEHS seniors can be the third party to provide feedback that students may need to have the perfect application.
“The essay review sessions helped me get help from trained English students who could check writing, style, and grammar,” Cooper City High School alumni Jeremy Brower said.
To decide which review session dates to attend, students should check on the application deadlines for the schools that they are applying to. Seniors applying to schools with deadlines in November should attend the October 12 deadline whereas students with later deadlines such as February and May might want to go to the second review date.
