Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a fantasy swashbuckler film, and the most recent in the line of pirates of the Caribbean movies. The movie follows Jack as he is arrested and combines forces with a ‘witch’ (Scientist) and Will Turner, someone who has been searching for him his whole life.
The beginning of this movie was interesting but a bit slow and the plot was very well laid out and easy to follow despite not seeing the previous few. Certain points that reference the previous movies are explained and you get an opportunity to see what the sequel has in store. As for the storyline it managed to be entertaining adding unexpected twists that made the audience more emotionally connected to it. There were often hints at things that became important while remaining subtle when first introduced. There are tons of things that occur throughout the movie that leave you wondering and wanting more as the story progresses and the ending was very satisfactory.
If you have watched the series you can see that Captain Jack Sparrow has become a sort of one-trick pony character. Johnny Depp played the character well it was just more so that he is the same slightly indecipherable drunk as the previous films as he yet again avoids being killed by British soldiers. The other character throughout this movie were well played and felt very genuine watching them act. Some of the best were the Will Turner, Captain Salazar and Barbossa because they managed to make you feel such strong emotions with their performances.
The visuals and special effects were stunning, there are scenes with a house being dragged across the city and an island full of shiny gems which was very realistic. The sets were also well made and accurate to the pieces and time period they were representing. As for the costumes they were well done but not as accurate especially the pirates. The Englishmen had accurate outfits and weapons, they managed to make the atmosphere more toward the time period while not being distracting in the background.
Overall I would rate this movie a 7/10 for its incredible visuals, entertaining storyline, despite having some slightly bland characters. I would recommend Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to anyone looking for an action packed horror drama.
