“Girlboss” is a new series that premiered as a Netflix original on April 21st, 2017 and a twelve episode long waste of time.

The premise of the show follows a young girl named Sophia Marlow as she grows into adulthood unwillingly. The show itself was, as it states, loosely based on the autobiography of Sophia Amoruso, who made a fortune a decade ago with her vintage clothing brand Nasty Gal, which has now gone bankrupt.

This show has a few interesting ideas but the execution is quite terrible with the main problem being the terrible unlikeability of the main character.

The main character is a whiny narcissist who expects the world to hand itself over to her without her having to lift a finger. Throughout the show, her dad offers her help starting up her business and with living her life but she refuses, and attempts to make him the bad person despite his rationality. She treats her friends horribly, randomly steals things, and, on top of that, has an absurd amount of naivety and ignorance.

One way to improve the show would probably have been to follow Sophia’s best friend Annie (played by Ellie Reid) as that character really was extremely likable and I found myself agreeing with her actions and reasonability more than Sophia’s. Even with an incredible supporting cast, including RuPaul Charles as Sophia’s marijuana-smoking neighbor and Dean Norris from “Breaking Bad” as her father, this show’s lack of humor is painstakingly clear.

The cinematography was average throughout the show because the areas were sometimes beautiful but not as fully highlighted as they could have been. The occasional effects were okay, not particularly standing out but doing the job they were intended to. The actors played the roles they were given well, it’s that the plot in itself was dissatisfactory.

The writers obviously intended to have a women-empowerment hit but this show attempts too hard to connect with the current generation and completely misses the mark. It gives the false idea that ‘there is an easy way out’ and that you can get your way through life with little to no effort. Her boyfriend is also another terrible message in itself being that he is the typical drummer boy who crushes your expectations.

This show brings no satisfaction to the watcher, only making you frustrated with the idiocy of the main character and her just as frustrating counterpart. Adding romance to her situation only made the character further unlikable and provided no satisfaction to watching the entire series.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend the series to almost anyone and would give it a 2/10 because the cinematography was average, along with the effects. The acting was suited well to the roles given; however, the plot and main character’s attitude was dreadful and painful to sit through.

Girlboss is extremely unfunny and the main character is very unlikable, to match a lackluster plot.
