The Cooper City Cowboys girls’ basketball team took on the Cypress Bay Lightning in the District 12-6A championship on Saturday February 5th at home.

The Lightning began the game off on an 8-0 run, preventing the Cowboys from scoring for the first few minutes of the game.  The Cowboys struggled through the entire first quarter, only scoring five points during the eight minutes.

The Cowboys got off to a good start in the second quarter, getting back into the game and bringing the score to 17-12, but the Lightning ended the first half on a good foot and the score at halftime was 23-16 with Cypress Bay in the lead.

The Cowboys came out in the third quarter with a lot of energy.  They went on a 7-2 run during the first four minutes of the quarter and then continued to push.  They gained the lead and only allowed Cypress Bay one point in the final four minutes of the quarter.  The score heading into the final quarter was 29-26 with the Cowboys on top.

Cypress Bay took back the lead and held on to it for most of the fourth quarter.  For the final two minutes of the game, the Lightning and the Cowboys traded the lead back and forth and with 5 seconds left in the game, Cypress Bay made a free throw to give them a two point lead, 44-42.  The Cowboys took the ball up the court and got off a good three-pointer at the buzzer that bounced off the rim and rolled off.  Cypress Bay won the game 44-42 despite a strong fight by the Cooper City Cowboys.

The Cowboys were lead by Seniors Shana Edouard and Chanlir Segarra who finished the game with 10 and 14 points, respectively.  The Cowboys will play their next game on Thursday February 10 at South Broward High School in the Regional Quarterfinal game.
