On Friday August 30th, the Cooper City Cowboys football team faced off against the Coral Springs Colts for the Cowboys first home game of the season.

In the first quarter, the Cowboys started off the game by kicking off to the Colts. The Cowboys defense was on fire throughout this quarter forcing two interceptions, one by senior Tyson Burch and the other by senior Tristan Petron. After just a few minutes, senior Jarret Morgan had a forty-yard run followed by a three-yard touchdown run to finish the drive, giving the Cowboys their first touchdown of the game. Coral Springs then made a small comeback when they had a forty yard completion on the ensuing drive but could not move the ball any further due an impressive Cowboy defense.

This year’s starting Quarterback Tyler Sabine threw a fifteen yard touchdown pass to junior Brandon Fiske towards the end of the first quarter, giving Sabine not only his first touchdown pass of his career but also a solid start for the Cowboys.

“It feels really good to be out there,” Sabine said. “It’s an honor to be this year’s Quarterback”

The second quarter was full of flags and strong defense. The Cowboys had three illegal procedure flags, one holding flag (This flag brought back a forty-five yard carry by senior Zach Tasse) and one illegal substitution. Coral Springs had one delay of game and one holding flag. Still, the Cowboys quickly jumped back into things with three sacks, one by Senior Grant Frasher and the other two by Senior Lukas Volpe. Burch also contributed to this demolition derby with his second interception of the game. However, despite all this, the most impressive play of the game happened near the end of the second quarter. With fourth down, the Colts were punting the ball from the one yard line when Fiske blocked the punt and senior Phillip Tomasulo recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown.

At the half, the Cowboys were leading 24-0.  The third quarter started off with a thirty-two yard carry by Tasse capped off by a three yard touchdown run by Sabine. Although the Colts had made several attempts at a comeback they were no match for the Cowboys defense.

Due to lack of points by the Colts, Coach Walker decided it would be safe to put the second unit in. After doing so, backup quarterback Quest Hopler chalked up a seventeen yard run off of a broken down play.

During the Fourth Quarter, Morgan broke off for a twenty-two yard run and then another ten yard run for a touchdown. Coral Springs then connected for a 43 yard reception before their momentum was stopped when junior Dustin Kribs sacked the Colts Quarterback.

By this point, the game was out of reach and the Cowboys took their first victory, beating the Colts 44-0.

“We’re scoring good and keeping the ball on our side” Coach Walker Said. “So far everything looks good; I’m proud of these guys”

The next game for the Cowboys will be played this Friday at Coral Reef High School. Come out and support your Cowboys.

Side Notes:

Three players were injured during this game #75 Michael Butler and #23 Bryce Nelson for the Cowboys. For the Colts #44 Nick Wade was injured.
