This past Tuesday, the Cooper City Cowboys Boys Varsity Basketball Team faced off against the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders in a matchup of David versus Goliath. While last season the Raiders defeated the Cowboys in a blow out, the Cowboys would prove to be a much stronger and tougher opponent for the Raiders this time.

Senior Captain Scott Palmer led all scorers with 22 points and contributed multiple three-point baskets. Despite the fact that the Cowboys started off slow and were trailing at the half, they were able to take a six point lead during the third quarter on a 7-0 run led by the hot shooting of Palmer and the stingy Cowboy defense that forced multiple turnovers.

The Raiders responded with a run of their own led by Steven Haney Jr., their highly touted shooting guard who will be playing basketball for the UCF Golden Knights this coming fall. Although it was a tight game in the 4th quarter, the Raiders were eventually able to pull away and win by a final score of 60-51.

“Our whole team played our hearts out, but it just wasn’t enough,” senior co-captain Eric Siegel said. “We have to put this game behind us and focus on our upcoming games.”

The Cowboys certainly showed improvement from their last meeting with the Raiders and should continue to progress this season. The two teams will meet up again on January 17th at St. Thomas for the highly anticipated rematch.
