Every year in either October or November, CCHS students look forward to the annual homecoming festivities. This year’s spirit week will be taking place from October 15 through October 19. The Student Government Association (SGA) hosts the entire event and is in charge of coordinating the different spirit days. Additionally, they choose the theme and decided that this year’s would be “Candy Land” based, as it is “Sweet to be a Cowboy!”

SGA Adviser Natalie Flaten brainstormed ideas for the homecoming theme at the end of last year. Afterwards, students took a vote on what they wanted, and “Candy Land” was the most favorable amongst the crowd.

Monday is “Taste the Rainbow.” Students are to participate in color wars by dressing up in the corresponding color to their grade level. Tuesday is “Babe Ruth vs. Nerds” or, “Athletes vs. Mathletes.” This means that some students will be wearing jerseys to represent jocks, while others will be wearing suspenders and nerdy glasses to represent a stereotypical school-focused student. Wednesday is “Twinning Twix.” Students are encouraged to find a partner or group to dress alike with. Thursday is “Cowboys are Red Hot.” This is a CCHS spirit day where students will dress in school colors– red, black and white. The homecoming dance will be on Friday, although there is no school that day.

Compared to previous years, homecoming week is being held at an earlier date than usual. While the week has typically been held in late October or early November, there are reasons behind the new time frame this year.

“We decided on the week of 10/15-10/19 because it had an early release day, giving us an easy opportunity to place a pep rally there,” SGA President Hannah Ferguson said. “The dance is also able to happen on the Friday of no school, so people still have their weekend to enjoy after the fact.”

“Twin Day is really enjoyable because it lets my friends and I have a crazy and fun time while trying to pick out/plan outfits that we can match with.”

Every year, an intricately-made banner is posted on the cafeteria wall. The banner lists the days of the week associated with what to wear and the activities that are planned for each specific day.

“[SGA] started working on the [homecoming] banners really early this year, probably the second week of September,” Ferguson said. “[We did this] so that we could have more than enough time to make them really pretty and decorative.”

While the homecoming theme changes from year to year, there are certain activities and spirit days that remain a tradition. Color wars is a common dress-up day that always reappears. Having each class wearing a certain color allows for the distinction between different grade levels. Twin Day is also a feature of homecoming week each year because many groups of students are able to participate in it.

“Twin Day is really enjoyable because it lets my friends and I have a crazy and fun time while trying to pick out/plan outfits that we can match with,” Ferguson said. “We go through so many outfits trying to decide on what we want to wear together.”

Two events that happen every homecoming week are Krazy Kickball and Crazy Feats. Both activities involve students from each class working together to compete against another class. Krazy Kickball will be taking place on Monday, October 15 and Crazy Feats will be held the following day. These festivities will be located in the CCHS gymnasium and both will start at 6 p.m. on each day. The entrance fee for each event is $5.

“Crazy Feats was a lot of fun last year because everyone got to participate together and support our grade.”

“Crazy Feats was a lot of fun last year because everyone got to participate together and support our grade,” SGA School Affairs Chairman Drew Okun said. “It was also a good place for me to hang out with friends and meet new people.”

The pep rally, scheduled for Thursday, October 18, will not be in the gym this time around. Instead, the Sound of Pride (SOP) band and color guard will be performing their competition show on the football field. Sports team members will be introduced to the student body and there will be a radio station and DJ present.

The homecoming dance is one of the biggest events of the week. Students who participate in the dance dress up in semi-formal attire and are given the chance to dance the night away with their friends or a special someone. Music is played by a DJ and food is provided as well. Tickets for the dance are being sold for $45 between until October 12. The dance is being held in the CCHS cafeteria on Friday, October 19 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“As a freshman, homecoming was not what I expected,” sophomore Brooke Bartel said. “It was so much fun dressing up and getting ready for this event. Dancing the whole night with my friends was amazing.”

As SGA continues to prepare for one of the busiest times of the year, they all have their hands full. With so many different activities and events planned, CCHS will be full of school spirit throughout the entirety of homecoming week.
