Who would have guessed that the infamous Cigarette Smoking Man and Special Agent Scully had a kid? Season 11 of “The X-Files” premiered on January 3, 2018 with quite the twist. Despite the controversy and enraged fans, many are continuing to follow the show to the end.
Agent Scully and Agent Mulder’s wavering romance was thought to be the cause of Scully birthing William, their supposed son. It makes perfect sense considering the relationship between the two was fueling the show forward. The notion that Scully and Mulder eloped was a fan favorite theory that has now been proven wrong.
Revealed in a flashback to season 7 of the show, Agent Scully took a road trip with the infamous Cigarette Smoking Man, where he confessed his attraction to her and proceeded to not only drug her, but impregnate her with the first “superhuman.” This “superhuman” is an entity with both human and alien DNA. This makes the cigarette smoking man the figurative father and not the biological one, a relationship that has many fans confused.
This plot twist was 18 years in the making. The creator, Chris Carter, explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that it was necessary for the storyline to move forward. Carter also now has the chance to expand on the conflict created involving the origins of William.
Another question previously left unanswered was resolved in the show’s season 11 premiere. Season 10 ended on a cliffhanger that pointed toward a potential encounter with real extraterrestrial life. Avid watchers know that, more often than not, Special Agents Scully and Mulder come very close to meeting with another form of life but never close enough. An Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) was shown hovering over a bridge on which Scully and Mulder had been entrapped in a car. The camera proceeded to zoom into the depths of Agent Scully’s eyes and straight into her mind. In the newest installment of the show, it is exposed that she was hallucinating the entire time.
Season 11 of the show has received an abundance of mixed reviews, proving to be a lot for fans to take in. Some have come to accept the truth and others do not want to believe it at all. Although a couple of major questions have been answered, “The X-Files” continues to maintain its elusive trademark with many mysteries still left to investigate and solve.
- The original actors are still doing great.
- Story is now more cohesive and a clearer picture.
- Painted on exactly what happened.
- The show has lost most of its initial elusive charm.
